I grew up in magic and was manipulating cards from a young age and there are so many tricks. The one that is the easiest to perform and has a great effect is the 'force'. Here is a basic trick using a 'force'.
You can set it up as a mental prediction trick but being Calvinists we can set it up as a 'predestination' trick.
"Everything is predestined in fact I can prove it to you."
You take any three objects and put them on a table. You then take a piece of paper and write the name of one of the objects on the paper, fold it and set it aside. Let's say the objects are a quarter, a bottle of ketchup and a salt shaker. You write 'salt shaker' on the paper though it doesn't matter which one you write.
Now ask the person to take two of the objects into their hands. He picks the ketchup and the salt shaker. Now ask the person to give you one of the objects. He gives you the shaker. You say, "Are you sure that this is the one you want me to have?"
"Yes"
"Please open the paper and read what I wrote." He does and everyone is amazed that you proved the choice was predestined and somehow you knew the outcome.
The trick is that the other people don't know what the goal of the trick is. They assume your final response is the way the trick was supposed to go.
If the person keeps the shaker you say, "Are you sure that's the one you want to keep?"
If he picks the quarter and the ketchup and leaves the shaker on the table you say, "You have taken away the quarter and the ketchup and you have left the shaker, please look at the paper." Amazing! Even if the person changes his mind it's ok because your final response defines what the trick was supposed to be.
In other words, "Are you sure that's the one you want to keep?"
"No, I want to keep the ketchup bottle"
"Ok, and you want ME to have the shaker?"
I love to end card tricks with a force. First you force the card you want the person to pick with any force that works for you. The easiest is where you note the bottom card and then split the pack, they pick a card, look at it and place back on the top of the deck, you place the bottom half of the deck on top which places the 'marker' card on top of theirs. Now you only have to find your 'marker' card and theirs is the card just to the right (or beneath it). Now I bring that card to the top of the deck and do some fake shuffles and fake cuts. I split the deck into three piles with their card on top of one of the piles. Now I do the above force and let them 'choose' the pile that has their card. It's amazing. They think that not only were you able to ascertain the card they chose in secret, but also predict they would choose the pile with their card in it.
Obviously you cannot do the same force twice.
