Anyone ever bought furniture from one of those stores that allow you to buy direct from the manufacturer (plus a percentage)?

Given that such stores continue to exist, and presumably could not do so without income, I am sure that someone somewhere has purchased furniture from them.

A few years ago, items from Bassett Furniture often had problems, and they were not the easiest to work with.

After Katrina, I priced a whole house of furniture from several sources, trying as best I could to keep apples to apples. I did not find that the Direct Buy membership model would have saved me any money. your mileage may vary.

If you live in an area where there is very high humidity, beware pressboard of any kind in your furniture. It swells. Just because they say it is "solid wood" does not mean it does not have pressboard in it.

I am not even sure what this means. Isn't buying from the manufacturer through a third party at a mark-up percentage more or less otherwise known as "buying furniture"? I'm not even trying to be funny so much as wondering what possible difference there could be. When people buy my books, that's more or less the process. Sometimes they buy them straight from me, but the only difference is that, if they ask, I may write something in the front cover for them, albeit not legibly (I have connective tissue disease, and my handwriting is really bad sometimes). The cost is pretty much the same no matter what. It may be different for furniture, I dunno. But if I had to guess, that's just what they want you to think. I certainly wouldn't discount my prices for people buying directly from me, unless they had some basis for requesting it. There's no secret formula or secret source--you pay, you get book. I'd imagine 'you pay, you get furniture' is pretty much the standard.
