Refinishing furniture

I can't sleep so I thought I would ask a question about refinishing furniture.

Is this difficult to do? What is necessary to do a refinishing that doesn't look cheap? I'm interested in buying cheap furniture on craigslist and repainting it if necessary to match my room, etc.

I've found that it is not so much difficult as it is messy and time intensive. If cost is the primary motivation, you may find that it would be just as inexpensive to find a local unfinished furniture store. This would allow you to purchase pieces that suit your needs and finish them as you like without all the mess of stripping and sanding. But then again, you may like the challenge of the refinishing process.
