Sorry so late on the notification: the CS Lewis Institute is offering a conference on the Imago Dei, Thursday June 7 in Middleburg, Virginia. My pastor is presenting on the image of God in the intellectually disabled based on his recent book published by P&R --

George C. Hammond

It Has Not Yet Appeared What We Shall Be: A Reconsideration of the Imago Dei in Light of Those with Severe Cognitive Disabilities (Reformed Academic Dissertations).

Another presenter is considering an economic angle.

If your pastor doesn't know Skip and Barbara Ryan, he should probably get together with them. They are just up the road in Arlington now.

They've been down that road.

The book was inspired in part by his daughter's barely having spoken a word and having a plethora of physical and intellectual challenges. Virtually none of the historic formulations for the image of God really accounted for such folk in an adequate manner. Too many modern folk try to see a disability as another type of normal. My own son is on the autism spectrum so the work has been particularly poignant to me.

Sounds like a wonderful and needed conference. I am very interested. Much better than the 5 points over and over and over again....

This looks wonderful. Will there be video or audio available for those who cannot attend?

Does the website offer livestreaming or downloads? I would love to hear your pastor's message.

Excellent book. Read it at the start of this year. It is a great primer on the whole subject of the imago dei, not to mention the application he makes in speaking of the disabled. I myself have a son who is multi-disabled, mentally and physically.

It was a privileged to meet and worship with your family a few years back, Wayne. That visit crosses my mind often. You guys were most gracious to me. Your son demonstrated a simpleness of life I'm, frankly, too complicated to fully understand. I know there is something to be learned there. Your wife is a fabulous cook, too! May God bless you guys.

Very gracious of you, Greg. Thanks.

My "theology," if you will, concerning my own son is that the Lord could have made him entirely normal, but that he is the way he is for a reason. Undergirding that, a prior statement would be that every ministry exacts a cost, and a great ministry exacts a great cost. God took his normalcy and gave him a
great ministry. My wife and I are the first recipients of that ministry - we're not who we would have been but for his role in our lives ("special needs parents!").
Then every once in a long while we get feedback like yours that says he has had a role in the lives of others as well.
