David Dickson made the following paraphrase of Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 2:4:

My speech and preaching never glistered with the acuteness of wit, or humane Philosophy, nor with fineness of words fitted for persuasion, but in the evidences of Scripture, and sound truth, in which the Spirit shewed himself powerfully, and worked in your hearts: Therefore this kind of preaching is most excellent.
