Scott,

For me, the most painful section of your "Post Mortem" was the impossible to refute conclusion:

The evangelical convulsions over justification mean this: Van Til was correct. The fundamental principle of the evangelicals, at least in the Modern period, is religious enthusiasm. Because this is so, religious experience trumps truth every time.

37 years ago Bob Gundry began to teach me NT and Greek. 4 years--and 32 semester units--later, I was a committed inerrantist. That makes your truthful words even more painful:

In Books and Culture, Robert H. Gundry, of Westmont College, lamented not only that not only was he not invited to sign Celebration but also that he would not because it was too Reformed.

Back in the Westmont days, another one of my profs (White Horse Inn's Rod Rosenbladt) used to warn us that evangelicalism was an unstable coalition. He predicted that a preference for the subjectivity of religious experience would destroy the movement unless it returned to the objectivity of confessional Christianity. If the last four decades prove anything, it is that Rod was right. How else can one explain the ECT movement and the strange departures on justification? Thanks for the reminder, painful as it may be for personal reasons.

Thanks for your observations and ministry at WSCAL.
