Gary North With the Lord

Gary North, the theonomist and voluminous author, died today (February 24) while in hospice care in Georgia. He died of complications of prostate cancer, which he had been fighting since 2017. He died 13 days after his 80th birthday on February 11.

North's sister-in-law is a long-time member of my church. She had just visited him in Georgia a couple of weeks ago. Our pastor just sent out an email to the congregation announcing North's death.

Please pray that his wife, Sharon, and other members of the family would be comforted at this time by our Lord.
 
For all the books that I read by him back in the day, my favourite memory of Gary North was when an atheist rang into the American Vision show when he was a guest. In all honesty, I have never heard anyone explain the gospel to an unbeliever with greater clarity and compassion for the man's soul.

I guess he was the last of the original group of theonomists who came up in the '80s and '90s (there may be one or two more I'm not remembering). David Chilton, R. J. Rushdoony, Greg Bahnsen, Gary North - all gone now. I'm not a theonomist, but I considered North a brother in the Lord and prayed for him over the last few weeks.

Jordan is still around right? Other names escape me.
 
Not a North fan; at all. But funny story. My old pastor back I guess in the 70s was at some meeting and got into a discussion with North who didn't agree with him on whatever it was and he'd take a bite of food and then take a bit "out of me" as he would tell it. He was rescued by Francis Nigel Lee who extricated him from the browbeating.

Yes. In his writings, North exhibited a self-confidence bordering on arrogance. Well, he's perfect now, standing before his Lord.

I came to Christ only in the past decade, but I was familiar with North 20 years ago when I was running in right-wing libertarian circles. So, to me, Gary North was always that crazy economist who kept predicting recessions (20 predicted; 3 actual) while telling me to buy gold! I did enjoy him back then, nonetheless, he was quite entertaining.

In the past month or so, I did find a copy of his Crossed Fingers and have been reading through parts of it here and there. Seems to be a great history of the Presbyterian church in the USA and how the liberals undermined it. I am already seeing some "lessons learned" that are still applicable today, especially with the recent happenings in the PCA wrt Revoice, Side-B Christians, and the failure to pass the two overtures at their recent GA. That might be a good thread starter.
 
This is sad news. North was a powerful writer who had a great influence upon me. I don't agree with him on everything (e.g., the Sabbath), but would to God folks gave his writings serious consideration.

Which of his writings would you most recommend? And what are your thoughts (if any) on his Crossed Fingers?

My introduction to North was when I was first becoming a Van Tilian presuppositionalist. I read his Westminster's Confession: The Abandonment of Van TIl's Legacy. I recommend it. In general, I like his books on politics and law. A good example of the former is Marx's Religion of Revolution: Regeneration through Chaos. A good example of the latter is Tools of Dominion: The Case Laws of Exodus.

Many of his books can be found for free here. Since that is North's website, I think I might spend some of today downloading everything there, since he is now gone.

Gary DeMar posted this announcement last night, then deleted his post. Today I find no official confirmation of Dr. North's passing.
 
An update: I spoke with North's sister-in-law this morning (as noted in the OP, she is a member of my church). She told me that North died in Dallas, Georgia, a town about 40 miles northwest of Atlanta. He and his family had lived there since about 2008, and it was where he was receiving hospice care. He will be buried there, she said.

She also told me that he died just *one day* after his and his wife, Sharon's, 50th wedding anniversary. He may not have been aware of this, as he was in pretty poor shape for about a day or two before he died.

Please continue to pray for the North family as they grieve their loss.
