I don't post very often by many people's standards. But the Internet allows someone like me who writes about a fairly narrow topic (teaching the gospel to kids) to encourage people beyond the small number in my own congregation who might be interested. I regularly hear from folks who say they've benefited. I'm amazed by the reach of the Internet.
Still, Dr. Trueman's comments are good. Encouragement from afar can only do so much, and it too often comes from writers who remain aloof and/or ungrounded in the real world.
I've just returned from two weeks at Bible camp, where I spent my days not only teaching planned lessons but also listening to kids' stories over meals, playing games with them, helping them with muddy boots, and praying with them about everything from scraped knees to incarcerated parents. If I didn't get out and do that sort of work with kids, or if I only accepted high-profile and mud-free teaching assignments, I could quickly become the kind of fellow Dr. Trueman describes. I already drift that way at times. It would be frighteningly easy to end up there.
