Interesting observation...

Down here at the US Army chaplain school most of the students are some variety of Baptist. SBC makes up the largest group. What is interesting to me is that the Baptists here are moderates/liberals... even the SBC ones... and the NOTED exception to that are the 6 or 7 of us who are from Southern.

It gives one the impression that SBTS is the ONLY soundly conservative Baptist seminary... or at least the only one attracting soundly conservative students.

Not quite. All of the seminaries are pretty conservative. Danny Akin, former dean of the School of Theology at Southern, who hired much of the faculty presently at Southern, is the president at Southeastern. Paige Patterson, one of the architects of the conservative resurgence in the SBC, is the president at Southwestern (he had been at Southeastern for many years). Southwestern is an interesting case, however. The landscape of the SBC in Texas is quite varied. It could very well be that there are moderate-liberal students coming from there, though I can imagine that that will change now that Patterson is there. Midwestern's president, Philip Roberts, is a conservative, reformed Baptist. Chuck Kelley, president of New Orleans, is pretty conservative, from what I hear. And the new president at Golden Gate, Jeff Iorg, is a pretty conservative fellow too.

Now, this is not to say that the seminaries have always been conservative. Far from it. Southern used to be one of the most liberal seminaries before Mohler got there. Southeastern and Midwestern were fairly liberal too. You might ask when and where these guys graduated from seminary.

Interestinlgy, ALL the guys here from SWBTS are moderates. As are the 2 from South Eastern.

FYI - Charles Kelly at New Orleans is Paige Patterson's brother-in-law. Dorothy Patterson is the former Miss Dorothy Kelly.

All SBC seminaries are led by conservatives now, which is why the liberal (sorry, [i:324018b886]moderate[/i:324018b886] HAHA) Baptist General Convention of Texas is refusing to allow any of the seminaries a spot in the proceedings at their annual meeting this year. Usually the seminaries have an information booth and the seminary presidents might even be given a chance to speak to the state convention. The BGCT will however, have as an alternative a booth with info for the liberal Truett Seminary at Baylor University! Named for George W. Truett, pastor at FBC Dallas before Criswell, and surely a misnomor if ever there was one!

The moderates are also forming a seminary in Dallas to be named the B. H. Carroll Theological Seminary. Carroll was the first president of Southwestern. He was also a conservative and a Calvinist. For moderates to take his name as the name of their seminary would be like the Puritan Board changing its name to the Wesleyan Holiness Board.
