There's no particular reason for posting these, except that Dame Joan Sutherland was always my mom's favorite soprano, and no one has come along who can altogether replace her in the Verdi, Bellini and Donizetti roles that she sang so well. These early recordings are amazing.

It is rather remarkable that her mother thought she ought to be a mezzo-soprano (and Cecilia Bartoli's mother thought she should be a soprano: mother's plans are often subtly dashed, it would appear, but with good results for the rest of us).
