My wife and I have to decide what sort of insurance we want. I am fairly unversed in these things. I need to know what you know about EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization) coverage. EPO does not offer most out-of-network benefits, though it does offer out-of-network emergency and urgent care benefits. This is not so much a problem for us, as we can easily pick a doctor from the list and go with that. Here are the benefits:
- no deductible
- $2500 maximum out of pocket
- $20 copay (up to $500) for preventive care
- $20 copay for well baby care
- prescription benefits
- $350 copay for hospital care, then 90% after that
- $20 copay for a physician office for illness or injury (includes lab and x-ray)
- $100 copay for outpatient surgery in the doctor's office
- $250 copay for outpatient surgery in a surgical facility
- $50 copay for emergency room visit (this would apply to out-of-network hospitals as well)
- $20 copay for urgent care (also applies to out-of-network)
- $50 copay (then 90% after that) for CT scans and MRIs
- It also includes chiropractic care, "durable medical equipment/special requirements" (whatever that is), mental health, and substance abuse benefits.

What do you guys and gals think?

I'm a customer service rep for Humana Insurance. Who is your wife's company?

You really need to consider these in the light of the general medical condition of you and your other family members. Also, what are your other plan options.

All in all, though... I've seen better... but I've seen a whole lot worse!!!

Anyone know of any good ideas for family medical insurance while in seminary? That won't make me bankrupt? Are medical savings accounts becoming more available now?

We are both young and in pretty good health. We have a baby who is in good health.
The EPO would be through United Health Care. The other plan options are pretty expensive. The EPO would be about $160 a month for the three of us. The other options are $60-$170 a month more. Of course, we would love to get the $330 PPO, but that is just too expensive.

Patrick, I assume that you are not going to go to a SBC seminary, but if you are the SBC Annuity Board offers insurance for seminary students. I do not know if it is a good deal, though.

Patrick - one option, depending on how you feel about this type of thing, is to enroll your children in the state insurance program. Here in KY that is pretty easy to do because as long as you're a FT student they don't expect you to work full-time, so you can easily meet income requirements. Then, assuming you and your wife are in good health, you can just get major medical types of insurance to cover you in case you have a catastrophic event.... also, if your wife becomes pregnant she can be added to the state insurance. When I was checking out seminaries I also found that some doctors/dentists around the campuses would offer discounted rates to seminary students and their families because they understand the situation...

Another option would be to get a job at UPS. Their insurance benefits are awesome. And they don't cost you anything. That's what we did... and my wife now makes good money to boot!

This is what I do as a nurse. I am a case manager for Neighborhood Health; it's a large HMO here in Fl. Prior to this, I worked as the transplant case manager for Vista ins.

Bottom line, Insurance is not cheap. They either get you on the front end, or you pick it up on the back-end (no pun intended).

The EPO is not bad if you are a healthy family unit.......
Otherwise, I suggest putting out the funds.

Lon,
I used to sell Health Insurance (last year) and I can tell you that from what I've seen that plan sounds good. You can go ahead with that plan and not have to worry about second-guessing yourself.
