I'm looking for music recommendations both secular and sacred.

I'm pretty much at the moment into acoustic, folk, Americana kinda music usually with a darker (emotionally and sound not lyrically necessarily), I like Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, The Band, Neil Young, old bluegrass stuff, Hank Williams.

I don't like much Christian music that has large choruses and very upbeating, kinda cheesy stuff, I prefer somebody alone with an acoustic or traditional sounding stuff.

You might try Nickel Creek---particularly their self-titled album. Currently I'm on a Mumford & Sons kick (some swearing in "Little Lion Man," but otherwise really great). There's always Switchfoot (particularly their more recent stuff) and Fiction Family, a collaboration between Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek and Jon Foreman of Switchfoot. And of course there's James Taylor. Most of the above is mostly acoustic (except Switchfoot) and lyrically good (except for the exceptions above).

I find it good to listen to a lot of older stuff, but also to have one or two newer bands that I can follow.

If you like folk, I would recommend Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen. It is a million miles away from the typical Bruce album, it is just him, an acoustic guitar, a harmonica, and an 8 track recorder.

YouTube a few of these: Dock Boggs, Hobart Smith, Roscoe Holcomb, Gus Cannon, Leadbelly, Stan Rogers, Sacred Harp and Lined-Out Hymns Kentucky style.

Here is Tim Eriksen playing a tune from the Sacred Harp.

Looking for dark deep tones? Quit dipping your toes in the skinny water. Go for the greats.

Meaning haha?

Check out The Civil Wars
Its country and folk. I enjoy them.
The Civil Wars
CMT : Videos : The Civil Wars : Poison and Wine

Wikipedia labels them as Alt-Country, which Band of Horses has been labelled and I like BOH.

I'd suggest the Romantic era for starters. Nothing compares to the classics. Cash, Springsteen and Williams, fuhgeddaboudit.

Crossing Over to Scotland (Abby Newton) Abby Newton is a cellist, and her arrangements of celtic folk music are lovely, inspiring and unique.
