On the Most Important Matter of Pizza

I've done a fair amount of travel in this country, and I can honestly say that pizza outside of New York City (specifically Brooklyn) and New Jersey is of significant lower quality in my experience. Tell me otherwise!

My favorite spot is Emma's Brick Oven Pizza in Cranford, New Jersey. It's thin crust with a rich sauce and only a thin layer of cheese. I love black olives most of the time, though pepperoni and plain do it for me too.

I have yet to try Chicago deep dish and want to hear about it from my mid-western brothers!!! Has anyone been to that chain restaurant, UNO Chicago Grill? I hear they serve some, but I'm ever
-cautious of franchises.

Where is the best pizza you have ever eaten from? What is your favorite toppings arrangement?

Deep dish is horrible if you like New York style. I've been to Uno's and it's just grease. Now the best pizza I've ever had in America was a restaurant in DC called il Canale. I say it was the best because it tasted like pizza from Naples, Italy where I was born. And the best pizza in the world is made there. It's very difficult for Americans to make pizza as good as Italians, mostly because the ingredients just taste different when grown in different environments. What to look for in America though, is brick oven. That's how it's done in Naples, and pizzas literally take 5min to cook.

I recently found that Whole Food's thin crust pizza made in their ovens on site per order to be one of the better pizza's, and for only $14, plus $2 per extra toppings, to be a very good deal. I usually visit Papa Murphy's and bring one home to bake, but Whole Food's is now the better choice for me and my family. It is about the only reason I visit Whole Food's as the pretentiousness of the place leaves me cold. ;)

I was in Whole Foods a few days ago for the first time in years, and found it quite stressful to navigate when the air was so thick with pretentiousness it was hard to breathe.

Love me some brick oven. Man that stinks if I discover you're right about deep dish; I have high hopes!!!

Gold, Ruben. lol

Still gonna try Whole Foods though; being in elite and liberal New Jersey, of course there's one five minutes away. *eyeroll*

Try walking around the place wearing this T-Shirt as I did when odering a pizza:

Waiting around for the pizza generated three different conversations. One fellow in earthy attire, knitted handbag, sandals, and long hair seemed apoplectic.

You could have offered to get him a hemp handbag with the message from the t-shirt embroidered on it!

In the US? Walmart fresh from the refrigerated case. Great flavor, but lacking the pretension that most folks are willing to pay extra for. Just pop it in a pre-heated oven.

Maybe I am missing it since I'm on my phone, but was the link to the cartoon site intentional?

Pizza Express, Perth, Scotland. They have restaurants throughout the United Kingdom.

Comparing Chicago pizza with New York pizza is difficult. The two styles are so different it's hard to put them in the same food category. They aren't really the same product, although both are delicious.

That said, if I had to choose between one product or the other, I'd usually pick a Chicago pizza. I like foods that are doughy.

Just went to a pizza restaurant in White Marsh Maryland called Pie Five. I was impressed! :)

Chicago rules the pizza industry. Giordano's, Uno's, Gino's East, Connie's, Palermo's...... The south-side neighborhood mom-n-pop places are a real treat. They will all be gone one day, though....death by taxes......

Interestingly enough, there was a small pub in Edinburgh, Scotland, that had amazing pizza. It was very odd, but fantastic. I can't remember the name, though. In the US, I know only of places like Big Lou's in San Antonio, Texas, which is really good and close to New York Pizza from what I hear. Goomba's is good too.

Pizza Inn with faster ovens.

Dallas is the center of the Pizza world. Pizza Inn, Pie Five (started in Fort Worth, but corporate is in Dallas), Cici's (started in Plano , now headquartered in Dallas County), Pizza Hut (used to be in Dallas, now headquartered in Plano).

If Chicago and New York Pizza is supposed to be so good, why do they have so much trouble selling it to folks that have choices? People vote for Dallas style Pizza with their hard earned cash.

Yes, as it was emblematic of the Whole Food's shtick.

I don't know anything about Pie Five, but Pizza Hut and CiCi's are bottom tier in Chicago........cardboard with Ragu on top. One hasn't eaten pizza until he'd had Palermo's, Giordano's, or Gino's East............

Hmm. Americans vote for convenience and affordability. McDonald's sells the most burgers but they are hardly the best.

In Thailand the Pizza parlors offer interesting ingredients and spices that I do not find on pizzas in Chicago or New York.

My wife makes a better one than most anything I have eaten in NYC, Chicago, or elsewhere. Alas, the dread diabetes has put a damper on my regular pizza consumption.

Gotta vote for my wife's homemade pizza. Made with Homemade crust,
homemade sauce from homegrown tomatoes, etc.
