Richard King

Puritan Board Senior
I noticed that in bouts with depression nothing seems nearly as beneficial for me as merely being outdoors. I was wondering about some of the favorite outdoor recreations of this board's members.

I like to shoot guns. (not necessarily hunting but just shooting - be it cans, paper targets or piles of cow manure )
I like to camp and I am quite the frog gigger. I have helped many a frog croak.
I had a brief couple of years of golfing and found it unexpectedly enjoyable. Too financially challenged to do things like golf and ski nowadays.
In days gone by I liked to ride a motorcycle or just drive an open jeep down dirt roads with good music playing.
As a kid I was into Archery and lately I toy with the idea of starting again as something to do with the wife and grandkids.
Any others?

Camping, hunting, football, baseball, basketball, swimming, hiking, cross country running, and walking along the beach to pick up shells are among my favorite outdoor activities.

I don't do it as much right now, it being winter in Wisconsin, but I love to walk in the countryside. As a young boy I would follow creeks to see where they would end up. Never got as far as the ole Mississippi because that would have meant tramping through mostly urban areas, but I did love doing that.

Walking is perhaps the easiest and most benefical of all exercises.

Some people down here in FL like to canoe or cayak. If there's not too many bugs then its cool.

One thing I do all the time is go out front (or to a park, etc) and pass the football with my friend. You can also get a good cardio workout by having someone throw you passes that you run after to catch.

I imagine frisbee would work much in the same way, but hey, football's more macho!

Another thing that might be good for you is a dog (if you don't have one already).

Camping, backpacking, hiking, running, historical trekking, shooting flintlock muzzleloaders, reenacting. I've spent a lot of time in the Sierras, especially Yosemite Nat'l Park backcountry.

Being near mountains has been very important in my life. Just being able to see mountains along the horizon is comforting and uplifting to me. I find that nothing is more depressing than living the life of a flatlander.

I love archery, I have my own bow but I rarely get to use it. Hiking is always fun. Snow shoeing. Camping. Star gazing...

Shooting (tin cans, etc.) and hiking are both good sanity breaks for me . . . jogging somewhat (except it doesn't get me out of the city & I've got asthma), and camping is awesome (except that it takes a bit more time/effort - which I have very little of right now!)

Knife and tomahawk throwing, snow shoeing (I live in North Dakota), frisbee, hiking/walking,and Horseshoes (I almost forgot). I just like throwing things......
