When I was a new Christian, I had someone tell me this same thing ("The Bible is written in blocks of story...read it as such.."), and I learned so much more this way than if I did the fragmented a-few-verses-every-morning-devoid-of-context approach that typifies many Christians.
That really made clear how manageable it is to read the Bible in that way. It's too easy to think it is too hard to tackle that way and Dr. Shaw does a great job of dispelling that. Though I am trying out the Horner plan in 2013, I think this is a very good way to read the Bible.
That is how I read my Bible. I read the book in one sitting. Short books I might read there or four at a time. Today is the third day and I have finished Leviticus might jump ahead and do Numbers tonight.
