I was offline doing home improvement in Fort Wayne this week and had no access to the internet. Imagine my surprise when I came back to So Cal to this news! [If it has not already been discussed this week on the PB] what reactions do you all have?

The infamous quote "change is the only constant" certainly holds true at Mars Hill. We have experienced ongoing changes that have improved and transformed – as well as at times unintentionally created tension or heartache within our community. And now, we have another significant change to hold together.

Feeling the call from God to pursue a growing number of strategic opportunities, our founding pastor Rob Bell, has decided to leave Mars Hill in order to devote his full energy to sharing the message of God’s love with a broader audience.

It is with deeply mixed emotions that we announce this transition to you. We have always understood, encouraged, and appreciated the variety of avenues in which Rob’s voice and the message of God’s tremendous love has traveled over the past 12 years. And we are happy and hopeful that as Rob and Kristen venture ahead, they will find increasing opportunity to extend the heartbeat of that message to our world in new and creative ways. ...

I thought that my (and Bell's) Pasadena alma mater was already as broad as broad goes.

Piper, who first tweeted "Rob Bell, farewell" in February when news of Love Wins went around evangelical circles, tweeted "Seriously, as before, may you fare well, Rob Bell."
 
Los Angeles has had no NFL team since 1994 -- but they have Rob Bell!

Hmmm, I wonder if I should send a resume to Mars Hill Church ... :think:
 
Grand Rapids? Heart of Calvinism in the Western Hemisphere? Tim Phillips? ARP? Mars Hill? Yeah, an Erskine trained guy probably fits following a Pasadena man. Better start asking provocative questions, never giving answers, and producing your own videos to use in sermons. Maybe you could call them "Nomore."
 
I just saw Contagion the other night with my wife, and this reminds me a whole lot of the movie, except here, the virus is not starting in Minneapolis and jumping to the rest of the country, it is actually taking a plane from Grand Rapids to spread the infection to a larger market right from the get-go. :eek:

Actually a VERY smart and strategic move by Bell.

1. He will be proximate to the creative community in L.A. - a major outlet for his point of view.
2. He will be able to impact hundreds of seminarians (i.e., future pastors) at the largest independent seminary in the world (e.g., chapel talks and guest speaking if they do not actually put him in a classroom). The president has already written and spoken positively of Love Wins and Bell's ministry generally.
3. Easier access to flights to everywhere in the world.

Yikes!

That's funny: when I announced my retirement, I got one email, from someone I don't know. I haven't even gotten any from members of my congregations. :think:
