Rutherford Volume 1 - Now Shipping!

I ordered three copies. Just opened the box that came this morning. disappointed. 1. No shrinkwrap. I had intended to build two sets to stow away; hard to do without shrinkwrap. 2. I do not like the thingy for a dust jacket. 3. I do not like the spine binding. A good hard binding should be rounded not starkly square like this. This is the most square I've ever seen. So from several aspects disappointed. It is uniquely bound but the execution is disappointing. 4. I'd had prefered an offwhite paper too; far too bright white paper. So if there is no shrinkwraping of Rutherford I likely won't be ordering 2nds and 3rds again.

5. also while I like the contrast of cloth on spine and paper on boards, and did that in the past myself, the corner of one copy is alread bumped, torn and showing the grey board underneath from the shipping.

I haven’t opened mine yet- I’m in the city for the day, but I’ll lyk what mine looks like. They did the square with the Meet The Puritans book aswel

With no shrinkwrap the packers would have still have had to open it I gather to see the damage. Still, I'm not sure the switch in book makers has been a good move. I know the one they were using was "slipping" but that's pretty bad quality control. And I still don't understand or like the "square look". Maybe that is what is "in".

I don't have a copy but am wondering from your expertise,
1. what advantage does shrinkwrap bring aside from cosmetic marking and dust? I have heard or read somewhere that long-term storage in shrinkwrap presents several risks, is there any weight to that argument?
2. I don't personally see the purpose of these new jackets/covers. I assume it's the same as the new Owen volumes by Crossway? I see this more as packaging than as a dust jacket, and throw them away.
3. Does the flat binding affect how the book lays? I expect it's a manufacturing thing. Some people like curved spines but I don't think most people care.
4. Agreed on the paper colour.
5. disappointing to read!

I have a feeling that for those who haven’t yet made a Thomas Watson set purchase, this development may be a strong influence toward ordering the Banner version and not RHB.

I did some quick research. "Flat back" is the new thing; and you guessed it, one factor is it is cheaper to do. It supposedly lays all right. I don't get the new 1/5 dust jackets either. I've shrinkwap on the old Naphtali Press Anthologies from 1988-1990 brown and not hold up; i.e., it was not great shrinkwrap. I've had volumes like Gillespie's EPC (2013) and Bownd (2015) hold up till I ran out of copies. I used to see occasionally the 1990 edition of Durham on Scandal offered like new still in shrink wrap. So it can last. Whether it is better not to have it I don't know.

I found the font on the spine to be quite miniature as well. I am interested to see how the book will fare while being beat up. I dont have high expectations
