Vacation - Where?

My wife and I ahve looked at all sorts of things to do for vacation.
We are brainstormed dead. We're tired of trying to find something.

I have a vacation coming up for December 23-January 8.

We want to go away for one week, but don't want to spend a whole lot.

We were thinking about the Keys, but that's too boring and we are not beach people.

We don't want to be too busy.

In Florida, it will be nice, but it will be winter in most other places.

Any ideas of where we should consider?

OKINAWA, JAPAN!!!

Of course it will cost some major bling for those plane tickets.

My wife hates to fly. That poses a problem overall on the vacation front.

She will endure it if I have a REALLY good idea.

I don't have one.

Japan - not sure she would go for that. I would....believe me. But she is more the "mountains, woods" kinda of vacationing girl.

She'd love to go hiking.

But in the winter that's hard.

I would recommend Colorado if it weren't so expensive there. Or Washington. Idaho is beautiful, but I would hate to see what would happen should you run into DW...that could be brutal and a vaca ruin. If she were a B&B kinda gal, I'd say go enjoy the hospitality of Charleston, SC. Or you could come on up here and enjoy amish country.

You can get some pretty cheap flights (at least they were cheap not long ago on aerlingus.com and ryanair.com) to Europe and could stay in some beautiful places in the UK, Germany, or Switzerland.

Like Machen, I love mountains. If mountains and hiking are the criteria for a vacation, Europe has a lot of options (the Scottish Highlands, the French Cevennes, the Swiss Alps). For closer to home, you could consider the Appalachian Trail. Another option might be the Blue Mountains of Jamaica.

I think Switzerland could be well worth the flight, depending on just how much your wife hates flying...

You're living in Florida, but are not beach people. Kinda like someone living in Nebraska and not being the farmer types, huh? Well, you might consider Raleigh. Most people who are not "beach people" actually live in Raleigh. Then again, most people who are not mountain people live here too.

Is this winter concept a deterrent? I assume so, since the "but" was inserted after the "nice". Come to Raleigh. We don't observe winter here. It might be cold, but you won't see people all bundled up (I think it's a southern thing). The streets might be glazed with ice or snow, but no one seems to consider it when making transportation plans, so, how bad could it be?

We don't want to be too busy.

Perfect, come to Raleigh. Absolutely nothing going on. Well, almost. We have the big "Watch the Acorn Drop" on New Year's Eve celebration. Usually 200 or more show up. But, if you're a strict sabbaterian, this year would not be good, since New Year's Eve falls on a Sunday. Definitely helps with your not wanting to be too busy though.

Perfect, come to Raleigh. With nothing going on, there's no place to spend your money.


With all that you said I have a question for you.

For someone living in a state with 1200 miles of coastline and not being a beach person, for someone who appears to be averse to winter and doesn't want to spend a whole lot, why is it that you have a vacation scheduled for December 23 - January 8?

Let's see... You want something with awesome natural beauty, rich in culture and American History, filled with a genuine uniqueness, with plenty of things to do, that runs Christmas Season discount packages, has rooms with fireplaces, separate dining rooms with antique furniture, and chandeliers from the 19th century in the rooms, but with all the modern amenities, Pierfront fine dining restaurants overlooking sunsets over the undisturbed marshlands, but don't want it to be too "beach" focused, but also don't want to get on a plane (drive for about 6 hours?)?!?!?!
