As late as 1865, some Anglican churches in London were still receiving regular stipends from the government for the purpose of buying wood to burn heretics!

That's from Letters of John Richard Green, edited by Sir Leslie Stephen (1901), p. 160.

Green (1837-1883) was an Anglican-priest-turned-historian. He was forced out of the ministry due to poor health. His Short History of the English People (1874) was a best-seller in its time.
