Heavy Music

Oh, yes, there is much music marked "pesante" of which I am quite fond, especially among the Russians (both nationalists and otherwise) and the late Romantics. I am a hardcore fan of Mahler, Bruckner, Stravinsky, Shoshtakovich, and other composers who are fond of marking their music "pesante," here and there.

Or were you referring to something else?;)

Peace,
Alan

I don't/won't listen to the new stuff as (in my opinion) lacks both good singing and musicality that early heavy rock/heavy metal had. Too many bands shout and can't sing and oft use odd modes/toanality in the music. What new heavy band can sing like Marc Storace from Krokus or Don Dokken?

Stravinsky, Shoshtakovich, and other composers...

Haha. Are you familiar with Medtner? It's like Rachmaninoff on steroids. I played his Piano Concerto No. 2 in grad school. After finishing a forty minute run through, you might have thought I just got out of the gym (talking about pesante). :)

You can find Medtner's own recording of it on YouTube, but unfortunately due to his heart condition, his doctor advised him against playing the cadenza in mvt. 1.

He dedicated this work to Rachmaninoff and Rachmaninoff in turn dedicated his Piano Concerto No. 4 to Medtner.

Greg,
I disagree. I have always been a progressive when it comes to music. In my previous life, I exhausted all avenues of music and found most grit in the punk area. Musically, they were intentionally lacking; as an art, I got the point and warmed up to it and embraced it fully. I didn't really like where it went ultimately, i.e. Green day, etc.

I bought my Mini Cooper about 6 years ago; when I got it, Sirius came with it free for a year. Amazing! There are artists out there that mainstream folk will never get any exposure to. It's like a world hiding out there that you will never be exposed to unless you pay per service. It ain't cheap, but worth it.

So many to name: Band of Horses, Interpol, Alt-J, Alvvays, Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Cage the Elephant, Car Seat headrest, Cloud Nothings, Sleater-Kinney, to name a few.

These bands surpass most typical rock genres, lyrically as well as musically.

I am a power metal guy who dabbles in some gothic metal. There is so much variety but, I am particularly attracted to metal bands who have a symphonic sound with a female lead who does not growl. I did not know that there were bands like that until Alyssa White Gluz with Kamelot opened for Nightwish back in 2012.
1. Nightwish
2. Sirenia
3. Xandria
4. Delain
5. The Murder of My sweet
6. Eylsion.
Arven, Epica, edenbridge, Letters from the Fire (some of theirs), Lacuna Coil, Lunatica, Ex Libris, Dream Theater/James Labrie, Sabaton, Serenity (these last two sing about history!).

Some of my favorite bands are Smashing Pumpkins, Goo Goo Dolls, Styx, Depeche Mode, Nirvana, Linkin Park, War!

Medtner is a good Russian dose of pesante, to be sure!

I saw Trifinov's debut with the CSO (Dutoit, cond.) five years ago. He often plays Medtner for an encore. Thanks for your tale of the travails of performing him!

Peace,
Alan

Kamelot, Simone Simons (EPICA), Manowar, Nightwish are some I really like. I don't listen to music as much as I used to. I love all genres except country and polka music.

Have you heard of, Unleash The Archers?

I may be a little more relaxed that one of our kids likes metal, given that you guys like it and are Christian. He is actually a great musician with a good ear. Also, loves most Putumayo, classical and old country.

Scott,
I have not heard any of the bands you mentioned. I will say, for me, objective standards of pitch, phrasing, blending are things that jump out to me. The guy from Krokus I mentioned, demonstrates these qualities in spades. Now can listen to styles I don't like, but it needs to meet some of these objective standards or its irritating noise to me........

I still like heavy music. Don't listen to as much as I used to. I used to DJ for an online Prog Metal site. It was fun at the time. I quit that about 10 years ago.

I was in a hardcore band in high school. Advent, Call to Presevere, and Saints Never Surrender were some of my favorites. I had the opportunity to play with the first two a few times. Nowadays I mostly stick to contemporary bluegrass.

I like Dream Theater quite a bit, but more of their melodic songs than the really heavy stuff. I appreciate that their lyrics arent trashy and they dont seem to wallow in dark topics.

Medtner is virtually unknown today, although he was a pretty big wheel in his own time. Fortunately, Hyperion Records has done a lot to revive recordings of his music.

I rarely listen to hardcore nowadays...The only heavy music I still listen to is bands like Fu Manchu, Underoath, and VOLUME
