Dealing with Heretics and their Use of Scripture (Tertullian)

Our disagreement is over what principle is being taught, not whether Scripture should be ignored. To clarify, my position is “rod“ is to be taken as discipline in general as the most consistent use of the term in all of Scripture and not only narrowly as corporal punishment as has been argued above. Spanking can be used but if a parent chooses another form of discipline as appropriate for their child (does God expect us to spank a physical or mentally handicapped child for instance?) they shouldnt be kicked out of the church or called a heretic.

I think I have made my point enough and am going to let you all carry on.

Yes, this is a message board and we are discussing a topic. I believe your interpretation of "the rod" is incorrect when it comes to these passages. I think the physical aspect is quite clear. I think the tendency to over spiritualize these days is the bigger issue than to over literalize (if this is even a word). You disagree with me and I with you. So, that is where it remains and we can go on to the next topic. I believe my bigger disagreement was more with the last two points and where physical punishment was being compared with a 7th commandment violation. It does sound like we all agree that the Bible does command disciple of children with some type of "rod" whether it is physical or something else. So we have common ground there.

Ultimately, I am not anyone's pastor or elder here, so they should go to those individuals to get the official feedback and instruction.

Also, I was not advocating for calling anyone a heretic or kicking them out of the church. We can sin without being a heretic.
