John Gerstner produced numerous valuable teaching studies from Ligonier, almost all of which were titled “Handout _____.” They were to the point. You can find the audio on both Ligonier and Youtube. Unless I am mistaken, you cannot find the actual handouts. I decided to remedy that. Ideally, I would transcribe all of his points, put them in a pdf, and give it to Ligonier. I do not know if I will be able to do that. I will do that, Lord willing, with his apologetics material. Here is the handout on the sacraments, which I am using for my Sunday School class.

No kidding, huh. I started note-taking his Handout Apologetics this summer while I was looking for work. I guess it figures since Gerstner always seems right up your alley. Great minds think alike! (you and Gerstner; not me I am just a monkey copying the ideas hahaha)

Ambitious and a great help to the church. Good luck my friend. I really enjoyed this series, still on VHS I might add.

I think we actually still have the VHS cassettes from this series in our church library. Having listened to both Dr. Gerstner's handout theology and handout apologetics, I can definitely say I was edified by both.

I think Sproul picked up some of Gerstner's growl.

Gerstner always struck me as old school - he knew what he was talking about and he was unashamed and unapologetic to speak plainly, not scared of man. His lectures are always reliable, I especially liked his church history series.

Me too. From what I understand he studied under Van Til for a time, would loved to have heard those conversations.

Inspired by Jacob's thread:

A direct word-for-word transcript of the first lecture of "Handout Apologetics" by John Gerstner.

(Note: Some Latin phrases have simple parentheses as I am uncertain as to what he is saying. Also, the grammatical syntax was kind of freely created as he just flowed verbally a lot of the time.)

(Also also, when his pronouns were confusing, I added brackets in red to identify the correct antecedent to help out any possible reader)

Lastly, his major propositions I also highlighted in red for easier identification.

God bless you all.

My approach to transcribing is long and involves a few technical steps including copy-paste from Youtube's transcripts and using Word editing macros to streamline formatting, but still involves heavy lifting in adding punctuation such as "creating" sentences and paragraphs.

For now, I have absorbed the material enough where I do not feel the need to transcribe anymore for myself, but I am willing and able to transcribe the whole course if even just one brother feels like it would be beneficial for them and their real-life face-to-face ministry.

Let me know if that is you. If not, I am ok with leaving 1 of 13 only completed for now.

I will be offline most of the day working, but I will be back here tomorrow morning.

God bless you all.

Lord’s Supper: Lecture 1

  1. If baptism is the rite of entrance, then the Lord’s Supper is food for the journey.
  2. Those who have not begun this life cannot eat this food.
  3. Any bread will do and any (vine-related) drink will do.
  4. The minister breaks the bread and distributes it.
  5. (-7) The word is offered universally to all, the Supper to those who believe.
  6. It is communion with all who are one in Christ’s body.
  7. No altar, but a table.

He mentions Cunningham's discomfort with Calvin's language. He says he thinks he knows what Calvin is trying to say, but he also doesn't say Cunningham is wrong.

I am a huge fan of Gerstner. On an off-topic, I am currently going through his Handout Apologetics while also reading Van Til's Defense of the Faith. I see your Classical Apologetics profile picture and am curious on your thoughts against those who say that book completely misrepresents Van Til and presuppositionalism. I would love to know your thoughts on the book and its take on Van TIl if it is accurate or not. I am brand new to the whole subject. Feel free to send me a DM if this would hijack this thread. Thank you, Sir.

I did answer you in the DM, but I will make a comment on his handout apologetics. They are worthwhile in terms of thinking and getting insights (and for listening to Gerstner, which is always neat). He isn't the best in bringing depth to apologetics, though he does make an attempt at connecting the God of classical theism to the moral attributes, which many apologists do not always do.

Everyone misunderstands Van Til. It's part of his paradoxical methodology to affirm and deny the same proposition. You have to read him very carefully to see in what sense he affirms and denies it. When you read someone like Gerstner it is all plain common sense teaching. The aim is to be perspicuous. You have to enjoy mental strain to read Van Til, but every now and then he makes it worth your while.

What I enjoy about Gerstner's apologetic is the way in which the Christian worldview is taken for granted and you can proceed to examine the evidence accordingly. But when that worldview is questioned you realise you have to examine presuppositions, and that is where Van Til comes in. The problem is that he challenges foundationalism and veers in the direction of a transcendental presupposition. This leaves you ungrounded. Yet when he explains himself he will tell you the evidence is there. It can be mind boggling. This is why he needs so many interpreters to explain his meaning to you; but then these interpreters have all branched out in different directions.

We all agree it is a form of hyper calvinism not to preach because men are unable to believe, so isn't this form of presup apologetic a kind of hyper calvinism as well? No accusations. I am new to this all and thinking out loud.

I do love your avatar. Columbo is free streaming most everywhere and I am starting to watch for the first time ever.

Fun fact: the whole "one more thing" bit was improvised because Peter Falk forgot some lines and didn't want to have to do another take of the whole scene in the pilot. And it stuck...

Love them both dearly. I heard they were both big smokers, which may be part of the reason for the raspy throat.

One of the best detective drama series in my opinion.

I am always amazed by how ubiquitous smoking was back in the past. There are photos of the scholars working on fragments of the dead sea scrolls with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths right over the papyrus fragments.

If only I could smoke my pipe anywhere I go!

But not to highjack the thread, let me contribute. Thanks to the folks getting Gerstner's work out there. I'm teaching adult Sunday school soon and will need material on the cults and sects. It looks like I've picked up some good resources!

Brothers,

I'd greatly appreciate any and all transcriptions on his teachings pertaining to the cults and sects (as I said above). How would I coordinate with y'all to get ahold of those?

That's @PuritanCovenanter He is the one who has transcripts of Gerstner on cults.

If his blog links are not formatted well for you to copy-paste, his blog says you can email him for the Word documents, but I cannot find his email anywhere. They would pretty easy to format and I am willing if you need.

EXAMPLE:

Open @PuritanCovenanter 's link. Copy and paste the Gerstner text. Control your font and size (Note: font size of over 10 messes up Gerstner's tables, ie if you size your font 12 or 14, then the heading "Doctrines" will come out as "Doctrin" es"

I will attach my copy-paste job (I still have errors in spacing between pages as you can see) from @PuritanCovenanter 's post:
