As an "unapologetic" (pun intended, can't resist) "Clarkian" presuppositionalist, I volunteer the following for consideration:
While not wishing to be misunderstood as anachronistic, I believe the Westminster Confession of Faith essentially expresses the view of presuppositionalism logically with a place for evidence as supportive but without effective power to convict or convert without the Holy Spirit making one alive to His Own Self-revelation that doesn't depend on anything else to do so and all which is never effective unless the Holy Spirit quickens (even done "right" as I would argue, it is not effective to save unless the Lord grants the Holy Spirit-given salvific response--consider all the examples of some believing and some not believing the same message(s) in Acts; 1 Cor. 2:4-14; 2 Cor. 2:14-17:
WCF 1.4. "The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, and obeyed, depends not upon the testimony of any man, or Church; but wholly upon God (who is truth itself) the author thereof: and therefore
it is to be received, because it is the Word of God." [Emphasis added.]
The Bible is true because it is God’s Word [and it is His Own Self-revelation]. This teaches the self-sufficient and self-authenticating authority of Scripture where God speaks for Himself about Himself. 2 Sam. 23:2, Acts 20:32; 2 Tim. 3:15-17, 2 Pet. 3:16; James 1:21.
WCF 1.5. "
We may be moved and induced by the testimony of the Church to an high and reverent esteem of the Holy Scripture. And the heavenliness of the matter, the efficacy of the doctrine, the majesty of the style, the consent of all the parts, the scope of the whole (which is, to give all glory to God), the full discovery it makes of the only way of man’s salvation, the many other incomparable excellencies, and the entire perfection thereof, are
arguments whereby it does abundantly evidence itself to be the Word of God: yet notwithstanding, our full persuasion and assurance of the infallible truth and divine authority thereof, is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit bearing witness by and with the Word in our hearts." [Emphasis added.]
For believers, inner “evidences” are an encouragement to us and help our faith grow in the Scriptures. Only the Holy Spirit convicts a person the Bible is God’s Word. Only God's Word converts and saves.
This relates to the question I believe we most need to be asking, not what is effective but what is Biblical (bowing to God's providence to effectually call Whom He wills through the message and method He prescribes). That is, noting God's Word does not only give a message but a method of sharing it (in preaching and evangelism as well, though certainly we see variety depending on the audience ultimately it is a message one way or the other of "Thus saith the LORD!") No one tries to prove God in the Bible they simply proclaim Him, it seems to me. Also related, there is a method not only a message for how to do missions from the Bible. I was taught this by my seminary professor now with the Lord, Rev. Steven Miller (OPC, later RPCNA) this focus in an RPTS class on missions; here is a link to a lecture I gave reflecting his class and required books:
Theology and Method of Missions (it includes a PDF reflecting his class and these books). It is the same idea and overlaps with apologetics (and evangelism, and frankly, how to explain why society isn't worse than it could be and we have ample confessional language in the Westminster Standards already to do so).
I'm not in my office to check and quote (and it's been some time since I've looked at this section), but my memory is Robert Reymond in his
New Systematic Theology gives a very good defense of presuppositionalism (while amply addressing other views of apologetic methods).
More recently, stirred while reviewing similar threads at the time I was moved to preach this at the end of my sermon, "God is Gloriously Himself!" that was part of a series through WSC Q&A 4 with this message on Exodus 3:14:
... He is continually Who He Is, the reliable I AM.
... all people know this as creatures of God and his image due to general revelation [See WCF 1:1]
. Rom. 1:19-20: Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Thus, how utterly ridiculous for anyone to question whether God exists, or to deny His existence!
God is existence. And thus so is His Name! We only exist because He IS absolute existence! Rather, if anything, you and I should question the validity and justification for OUR existence before Him a thrice holy God!
We only exist to audaciously, foolishly in self-denial, possibly question His existence ... we only exist to even be able to stupidly do that because He exists! Because He is existence. He is I AM! He is YAHWEH.
Even Paul said to the superstitious Greeks on Mars Hill in Acts who kept a monument to this unknown god, Acts 17:28: For in him we live, and move, and have our being;
as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
Our existence is because of the fact that God is infinitely, eternally, and unchangeably His self-existent Being. Glory in that! In Him!
