Puritan Board Freshman
I’m graduating with my MDIV in May from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and I’ve been accepted to their ThM program with advancement to a PhD with an emphasis in church history. However, though I still identify with reformed Baptist convictions, I’d like to pursue opportunities with other reformed seminaries. I’m being considered at both Gordon-Conwell and Calvin for their online ThM programs. I had been hoping to be accepted at Calvin because they have a reputation for scholarship but I’ve been seeing that they seem to becoming progressively more liberal. I’m not sure how true this is so I’m looking for input. While I’m a complementarian I’m okay with a school that has more egalitarian leaning. I’m just not okay with progressive views of marriage and sexuality. Any insight would be great!

I live in West Michigan. Calvin is no place for a conservative theologian. While I think a mature Christian could withstand, and there are a few conservatives left in the faculty, I think better options are available to you.

Have you given any thought to Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary?

For the record, there are many conservative denominations who have ministers who go to Calvin for a PhD. I mean, who would reject having Richard Muller as an academic advisor, just because there is a circus outside? You find the conservative CRC men to help in the academics, use their world-class library, get your PhD and move on.

PRTS does seem academically rigorous but I’m concerned about the residential requirements, though they are minimal, due to the season of life I’m in.
Just visit them and ask them how things would look like for a busy pastor. Many have done so (and not even living in Michigan).

You can fulfill the residency requirement entirely in week long intensive courses. I started my ThM living in Iowa.

Why not a purely research PhD from some of the South African universities? What about the Free University in Amsterdam? They probably are not conservative but cheaper but you'd get a heck of a lot out of it still. How can you grow if you're only exposed to one side?

It strikes me that one should be willing to be exposed to other views if one wants a worthwhile Ph.D.

It is one thing to be exposed to the primary writings of other views, (that should be mandatory); another to be engaged in a culture that exudes the values of those other views in every aspect.

Since the OP would be distance, that might be less of an issue, but I would have no idea for sure exactly how. Anyway, OP, I am praying for you. Don't forget to include your pastor and church leaders in praying for direction here. God bless you

Yeah. It's like the one season of life where we're expected to know heretics as they know themselves. I want the doctors of the church of Christ to know how to respond to guys like David Bentley Hart, because I don't have the time or desire to, but if you spent 7 years on the chap surely you'd have something beneficial to say about him and at the highest levels of the discussion. And so on for NPP and stuff.

Just in time:
It sounds like they are pretty affirming as a majority. It’s a shame because the reputation for scholarship is what gained my attention, as well as program accessibility, but this goes beyond just seeing things from a different view point.

Article:

"Over the past several years, Calvin faculty have had to learn a new language that includes words like synod and gravamina and status confessionis. This is because, in 2022, the synod of the Christian Reformed Church (CRC)—the governing body of the denomination—adopted a report on human sexuality which stipulates that “homosexual sex” violates the definition of “unchastity” in the Heidelberg Catechism, one of the confessional standards for the university. To use evangelical nomenclature, this means sex was deemed “a salvation issue” and hence one on which disagreement was disallowed. ...

If, like me, you signed on to the Reformed confessions over 20 years ago, you thought you were signing up for one thing, only to learn, in 2022, that Synod had moved the goal posts. So, since 2022, the university’s administration and Board of Trustees have been trying to navigate, on the one hand, how to preserve the university as a place of courageous curiosity and academic freedom while, on the other hand, how to retain the distinctly Reformed accent that has distinguished Calvin in the wider orbit of higher education.

I don’t want to debate the merits of Synod’s stance on human sexuality. (Actually, technically, as a faculty member I can’t publicly debate the merits of their decision.) Instead, I want to treat Synod’s HSR decision as a symptom that demands a more fundamental question: Should Calvin University remain a denominational university?"

Comment # 6 (working from top-down in Comments):

"There is a problem with this right from the start. Synod 2022 did not for the first time in history declare same-sex acts as being included in unchastity. Ursinus, one of the co-authors of the Heidelberg Catechism included homosexuality in that category in his commentary. This is a very basic consideration and renders this entire article suspect."

Reply to #6 (from a Dr. Jim Payton):

"Ursinus’ commentary was written almost 20 years after the Heidelberg Catechism. The Reformed churches who have adopted the Heidelberg Catechism as one of the “Forms of Unity” didn’t adopt the commentary, where Ursinus stated that: they adopted the Catechism, where it is not stated. — And if you want to focus on the commentary, then pick up on the three times Ursinus condemns “unchastity” within a married relationship … that didn’t even get a mention in the HSR that recent synods have built on."

Unbelievable stuff right there. They have traded wisdom for folly and speak twisted words of clever construction rather than words of balm for the broken and life eternal.
