So, who's seen it so far? Thoughts? How'd it compare to (the first half of) the book?

My wife and I went to a midnight showing on opening day. Very entertaining, despite the costumed nerds surrounding us. ;-)

I heard the plot was spellbinding.

Ah hex, give me break - it's hard to find humor without cursing these days. Owl be going now.

I went on Friday night to the midnight showing. I thought it was fantastic. I love how the series has progressed to its current dark and ominous form! Can't wait for the finale next year. What did you think about the part where the universes split and collided with the wizard underworld to form the perfect dimension?

... Just Kidding!

I took my 3 oldest to the midnight showing & we loved it. The nerds in costume were an added bonus for us. Most nerds we know wear street clothes.

While I stood in line in my Gryffindor robe (and I'm always dressed like that, so quit calling it a costume!) I caught the attention of a pretty girl because I was waving my wand and mumbling a love incantation in her direction. She thought it was charming. :D

Who is Harry Potter?

Andrew T., that deserves post of the week in the humor category! Austin, sorry, but he nailed it.

Okay, I'll bite. Do none of you have any issues with Harry Potter? I understand that the books are well-written and that the movies are entertaining, but I'd hate to find one of my sons running around the basement pretending he's a wizard casting a spell or crafting a potion. As a child wrapped up in that fantasy world (even when parents do their best to distinguish between fantasy and reality) how could you not want to play like that?

At what point are we taking something that the bible says is evil and making light of it through the magic of hollywood?

And yes, I recognize the hypocrisy of some who point fingers at Harry Potter while waxing poetic about Narnia or Middle Earth. I don't have all the answers, but I know that Harry Potter is something I'm not comfortable with and wouldn't be taking my children to see.

Saw it today. It is the most 'threatening' film yet, and although under 12s are allowed to see it with an adult in the UK, I think it is very scary on the big screen for under 12s!

I just want to see the final bit right now!! Of course, I still maintain that no movie can compare to sitting down and reading the originals.

For those with issues relating to Potter and Witchcraft, I recommend this post by a friend of mine in the ministry:

Many people here have issues with Harry Potter. Most of us are keeping quiet to respect the wishes of the original post. If you review the archives you'll find at least half a dozen threads where we are not so silent. ;)

I saw it. Did you catch the reference to 1 Cor. 15:26 on the tombstone?
Was it there? I looked and didn't see it.

Anyway, I thought the movie was great. I'm so glad they split it up into two parts; it's hard to imagine how it would have turned out had they tried to fit it all into two and a half hours.

I actually remember that from the books. While I'm still up in the air over whether Rowling is a believer (she's a practicing Anglican---which can mean any number of things), her work is clearly steeped in the fantasy language/imagery pioneered by Lewis and Tolkien, which is steeped in Christian symbolism (albeit, medieval Christian symbolism a la Dante, Arthurian Romance, etc).

I haven't seen it, and I probably won't. I watched a bit of one once - it seemed agonisingly predictable and clunky :). Every single one of the films has been trailed as so much *darker* than the preceding one, by now the screen should be completely black.
The books are worse, if the one I read is anything to go by. The blurb was the most exciting thing about it. Please don't hit me :( I hope at least I'm on topic!
