I was banned from there probably two years ago. The Monergism server is far better in my opinion.

Can someone explain Discord? I've never quite understood how it works.
What would you like to know? It's a social media platform, originally intended for gamers to connect and play with (there are voice chats where you can share your screen and camera if you'd like), but has since evolved to be for a wide variety of different communities in addition to gaming ones. I personally am not and never have been a gamer, but Solas does have some gamers that play together. I mostly stay in the text chats and have enjoyed taking part in and learning from the theological discussions there as well as in other Christian servers (groups) I'm in.

Ok, so basically a more modern version of the chatrooms from the mid-90s?

Lol Kind of, yes! Here are screenshots from the mobile app. The first picture has what are called channels, where appropriate discussions are held. The second picture is one of the places where serious discussions take place, which is where most of the theological discussions can be found.

Hello, @reformedsojourner!

The Signature Requirements state: “The profile section of your user control panel contains information that must be filled out so that other users of the board can know who you are as a poster on the Board. Screen names are great, but they are confusing and we would like to have the proper information on each member.”

Currently, your signature is not in accordance with the requirements of the Puritan Board, as your first name is not listed in your signature; rather, you have chosen to enter your name in as “Reformed Sojourner.” While it is true that nicknames are allowed, e.g. “Zach” for “Zachary,” I doubt that anyone calls you “Reformed Sojourner” in real life. Please update your signature to comply with the Board’s standards.

Thank you. :)

So channels would be equivalent to forums here, but as a chatroom rather than a discussion board, probably more of an emphasis on short-form exchanges with faster turn-around time?

Correct. Or almost as if Facebook messenger (if thinking about turnaround speed) had a way to make conversation categories for the same group chat.

It's similar to a message board with the addition of voice chat if you want it. @Charles Johnson is correct that it is generally used by people who play online video games, but it has expanded out to other areas as well. I believe Matt Slick from CARM is in discord regularly along with other apologists.

Discord-style conversation can have its use but like old AIM chatrooms you often end up with multiple conversations going on at once and if you're not there as it's happening then you have little hope of catching up the next time you open it and see there are 200+ new messages.

The history is almost entirely useless as well because there are no topics so trying to find something you remember from two years ago is next to impossible.

It's good for near-real-time chatting, but terrible for long-term value. It's more instant gratification than forums I suppose.
