satz,
Well, you just articulated yourself why I felt the question might be considered frivolous. No, I do not think in theory the answer should have any effect on the way we live, since we are to live to please God and not man, so it was just a matter of curiosity, really.
I understand that I know not all Christians fully grasp that concept and continue to struggle with believing they have to 'please everyone'.
Two very dear ladies I know struggle with this, one is in her 70's the other in her mid 30's. They have both been saved a number of years, but still think they need to please others, or they will get mad or be upset with them, including their parents.
So yes, to your next comment, there is a practical purpose to teaching this to our children, so when they LEAVE home, they are not still emotionally attached to us as parents, thinking they must some how be perfect, or if they make choices that disappoint us, we will stop loving them.
The belief that pleasing a person, is as important as pleasing God can emotionally cripple a person in life.
If a person believes they MUST always please their parents, then when they get married they never emotionally leave home and cleave to their spouse.
If they believe they MUST please others, then they get sucked into the trap of everytime someone asks them to help with something, they can't say NO, even if it over extends them, and takes them away from their family even more.
So really it applies to every day things, and not just adultery. There again though, if they can't say no for fear of hurting some elses feelings,
they could certainly get sucked into something like adultery out of fear this other person will be mad at them. It also ties to the verses about letting your yes be yes and your no mean no.
now if/when they realize, it's more important to please God, they would begin to gain a healthy fear of God. And in turn begin to overcome the fear of some person being disappointed in them, and they will begin to make wiser choices in life knowing God is looking at the motives of their heart. To see if He is truly God in their life or if man is god over their life.
That said, it is possible there might, (to our shame, really, i suppose) be some practical effect, just like Solomon in proverbs 5 appeals to the various human effects of adultery in order to persuade his son against it.
