Are we blessed from tithing?

Before the Lord opened our eyes to the Reformed faith my wife and I were involved in "health wealth" theology (or lack there of). Since then we have not been perfect in our tithing but we have tithed purely because we believe that as christians we should. Where as before we would have expected certain "returns" on our tithe that we could work out with a calculator. Would God have to give us 10, 20, or 100 fold for this tithe or offering. I am now working with a fellow who definitly believes in "I tithe/gift therefore God gives me....". He continues to tell me everytime he makes an "investment" by giving someone a good deal, a freebie, or he tithes extra at church. Example: today he gave a freebie from our throw away pile to a church and came in my office to tell me that I need to get ready for the blessing that God would be sending our way. How should I respond to this? Does God bless our tithing and gifts? Are we to just tithe because the Lord tells us to or is there other biblical purposes? What is the biblical view of tithing? From threads that I have read on here I don't even know if we are supposed to tithe (i.e. 10% every pay check) or just give as we feel moved. What I can say though is that if someone is giving in order to get something, the giving reflects selfishness and not godliness.

I'd tell the guy if he's making loans to God, his rates are usurious.

If all we have is God's, however, returning a portion will be a joy.
