We cannot know whether we are elect

Common objection, but specifically in regards to Deuteronomy 29:29 which states, "The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law."

Calvin warns against speculating on God's hidden decree. Catholics often argue, using Augustine as a defense, that election is part of God's hidden decree and not for us to figure out. How would you respond to this objection?

1 Thess. 1:4, 5; 1 Peter 1:2. God has revealed means by which we may come to know it. We cannot know it in itself as it exists in the decree and foreknowledge of God, but we can know it by its fruits and consequences. I am sure Augustine and Calvin would say the same.
