Sam Jer

Puritan Board Sophomore
I am still only about half-way through the book I am currently reading, but I am already thinking about what to read next. I think the next topic after the current one I am reading on covenant theology will probably be Christology. As in the person and work of Christ. What are your'e suggestions in this regard?

Bonus points if the book suggestion is (and I do realise that one with all of these criteria is unlikely, do suggest things that don't fit these too):

- not very long (I know that's hard with the topic in question)
- is written by a reformer, puritan, English dissenter, Dutch second reformation guy, covenanter, seceder (as in Erskine ext), free church, or someone else with similar leanings
- is pastoral and/or experiential
- explicitly deals with heresies
- explicitly deals with Islamic claims (or some other group denying Christ's divinity)
- uses the Old Testament extensively

Filter through some of these

Glory of the Redeemer by Octavius Winslow.
“Octavius Winslow is always full of Christ-centered, experiential substance. In The Glory of the Redeemer, he is particularly warm and majestic when focusing on the exaltation of our worthy, inimitable Savior. Here is devotional writing at its best—providing food in abundance for the mind and soul of the Christian who relishes glorifying the Christ.” — Joel R. Beeke

To note, there's a new book by Brandon Crowe, which should address several of your requests.
For a short modern treatment, Wellum has an introduction (as well as a larger volume).
There are a lot of books on Christology, it's difficult to know what's best when it comes to modern treatments.

For a more advanced text relating to contemporary Christological issues, check out Rafael Nogueira Bello's Sinless Flesh: A Critique of Karl Barth’s Fallen Christ

Brandon Crowe is the best one stop modern volum in my opinion.
Steven Duby's one is the best tome of this century in my opinion.
