Bookshelves

I'm looking for some recommendations on bookshelves. The study in my home has a 9 ft high ceiling, and I need to put bookshelves along two walls. One wall is 75 inches in length (6' 3"), and the other wall is just shy of 13 ft 4 inches. The two walls connect, as will the shelves. I would like for the shelves to go all the way to the ceiling if possible.

I was wondering if there is a particular store, with which someone has had experience, where you can purchase such materials and put them together w/o having to do any carpentry.

Probably a long shot, but thought I would ask here.

Blessings,

I was just checking to see where Elkton was located. Wow! You're really close to D.C. If I move to Quantico this year I would be really honored to meet you some time in the near future.

Anyhow, IKEA has some pretty inexpensive options that you could check out. There is an IKEA at the Potomac Mills Shopping Center in Woodbridge, VA just off Exit 158 on I-95. You might just want to buy a number of shelves and space them out evenly. They have some pretty innovative ideas there. I'm not sure how "beautiful" you want it to look but there are some cool options like shelves that slide into the mounting hardware so the mounting stuff is hidden from view.

There are also finished boards at Home Depot that you you could mount with brackets. The difficulty in buying a bookshelf would be finding something that maximizes the shelf space for the wall real estate you have. I can only imagine the number of books you must have.

Mounting shelves on walls is pretty straightforward as long as you have a stud finder, a drill, and a level.

I hope this is helpful.

:ditto:

BTW, There is an IKEA in College Park, MD.

I would Opt for IKEA for good deals, and for easy assembly. I dont know how practical it would be for you, but your post brought this to my mind. They have some really great designs for the home but it seems to be a little too pricey for me :p

I would have the built if I were doing it - I had some custom built for my office last year - they ROCK; you are close enough to P. Dutch country to locate someone. I live about 90 miles from you, I really miss the bookstore that used to be there, made many trips as a student.

Have them built. My dad built some for me last year & they are much better then anything I have ever purchased.

He was able to do several things that saved space and let me shelve an extra couple of hundred books. Custom shelves are always best.

Sorry to interject, but if you have toddlers or toddlers visiting on occasion it is important to anchor shelves that high to the wall. We've even had a near disaster when our older teenage sons were horsing around in front of the shelves, causing them to sway.

Anyway, sorry to interrupt, especially if you have already thought of this.

I thought about recommending the same Kevin but this can be quite expensive and didn't know what Pastor King's budget was. There are some pretty functional modular things that I've seen at IKEA that allow you to build some custom things for pretty cheap.

Granted.
I am 40 years old & have over 3,000 books. And I just now got the kind of bookshelves I always wanted.

I'd do the same thing and probably will at some point though my library isn't nearly so large.

I agree with the suggestions that you have them built. My dh built our bookshelves - they have custom spaced shelves to accommodate different sized books, are floor to ceiling, and cover two walls in our dining room. It's like eating in a library! Having them built may cost a bit more but you'll be able to use wood of your choice instead of veneered particle board, and the quality will be MUCH higher. Personally, I'm not a fan of IKEA - their products look really good from a distance but on closer inspection are rather shoddy. If you have a large amount of books, that type of shelving will simply not hold up long-term. Just my :2cents:

Follow up

All things considered, I decided to contract a man in our church to build some custom bookshelves for my study. I think this is going to be the best and most practical way to do it.

Thanks for all your advice/suggestions.

That's great! You'll get exactly what you want. I would love to see pictures too just to see how massive your collection of books is.

I want to see them too! I'm tired of these cardboard bookcases.
