I am hoping to do a study of the book of Proverbs to aid my own spiritual life. I have Bruce Waltke's 2 vol work. I also have Charles Bridges commentary and think it might be the one I use as a devotional emphasis. All the reviews of this commentary have been very high.

Spurgeon said (in the 19th century) "The best work on the Proverbs. The Scriptural method of exposition so well carried out by Bridges renders all his writings very suggestive to ministers. While explaining the passage in hand, he sets other portions of the word in new lights."

I also like using commentaries from a previous century (although not downplaying important modern commentaries).

Interested in your thoughts of the Bridges commentary. Thanks.

I wouldn't teach or preach on Proverbs without it. It is undoubtedly the best of the 19th century commentaries on Proverbs.

I think if you are actually trying to teach and apply the wisdom contained in Proverbs, you'd be hard-pressed to find something better.

I've read through it. I loved it. He showed me how rich these seemingly-simple Proverbs truly are. I hope to read it again someday.

Thanks folks. I am much encouraged to use this work in my study of Proverbs. I am also using this practical journal 'Pass it on'

As a matter of interest Lane, this Bridges commentary is not in your list of recommended commentaries on Proverbs.

How do I have 7 when I am 3-3 thus far?

I could easily put it on there. While the list focuses on the more recent commentaries, I do have some of the 19th century greats on there. Even if it wasn't top 5, though, I still wouldn't teach or preach on Proverbs without Bridges. I debated putting it on the list. I may at some point in the future.

You said Bridges is the greatest 19th century work on Proverbs. I like the idea of including a great work of a previous century. I think C.S. Lewis' “chronological snobbery” is a real danger when it comes to commentaries.

Is it a ""Bridge"" to far to say say it should be included? ;) I wondered if part of the problem is that there are so many good modern commentaries on Proverbs that the 19th century ones get pushed back a little.
