buggy

Puritan Board Freshman
I was just approached on campus by a group of guys spreading some tracts. They gave me one. Now, there's something very weird with their theology.

The tract says Man consists of spirit, soul and body, and when a person becomes a believer, he has to "cooperate with God and let God spread through his soul". And that Jesus became a "life-giving spirit" when He resurrected.

Sounds very gnostic to me. Are they heretical? If they are (probably are), what group would they be classified as?

Well, that part that you quoted has no basis in Scripture. It does sound like some sort of neo-gnosticism.

Sounds like an off shoot of the Holiness/Keswick movement. Do they mention Watchman Nee or Witness Lee?

No. I was busy attending classes so I just accepted one of their tracts. No time to ask. These guys (plus a young lady) look like teens to me. The tract only had one contact: an email. No church website. So I suppose it's just some small Pentecostal fringe group.

I'm not so sure about this. If I understand buggy correctly, we're looking at a non-literal resurrection of Christ, which is an outright heresy. The Holiness movement, and those with perfectionist tendencies like Watchman Nee, do not embrace such a heresy. Having looked through Watchman Nee's "Normal Christian Life", I'm convinced that he's not all that unorthodox despite his errors regarding sanctification. Tripartite anthropology is common in certain Charismatic/Pentecostal circles, and the "cooperate with God and let God spread through his soul" quote is very much the same. Typical "let go and let go" theology. With regards to the non-literal resurrection of Christ, I agree that it reeks of neo-gnosticism. Never knew such groups existed in Singapore.

Your signature says you live in Singapore? Perhaps it is some local group?

If anything, cults in Singapore are generally "imported".
