Commentary on Romans

I have a good friend who is in his first pastorate and recently started going through Romans. I would like to get him a good commentary/study on Romans and am curious what you recommend.

For background, he has a bachelor from Moody but has no ability in the original languages. So commentaries that are heavy on the languages would not be beneficial to him.

Is Murray heavy on the languages? I was thinking he was, but could be confusing him with someone else.

I like Murray when I read part of him over a decade ago.

Moo and Schreiner are both heavy on languages. Find him the old Lutheran commentary by Anders Nygren (you'll have to find it used, most likely). Dan Doriani's contribution to the REC is also excellent. For sermonic material, Boice is good. I also really like Garland (Tyndale) and Peterson (Evangelical Biblical Theology Commentary). There are a ton of excellent resources on Romans. He should be able to find Calvin, Henry, Gill, Lange, Poole, Hodge, Haldane, Shedd, and all the old greats online (books.google.com or Christian Classics Ethereal Library).

Only place I could find it is in Logos. You can purchase and read online. Someone desperately needs to print it.

It’s kind and thoughtful of you to want to bless your friend with a resource. If you and he are open to it… instead, consider getting your friend a resource to help him learn Greek... even if it's just how to use electronic tools. Maybe something like this: Greek for the Rest of Us. He needs to be able to at least read moderately technical commentaries or his preaching ministry is going to suffer. Gaining enough familiarity to be able to benefit from a wider range of good commentaries will pay huge dividends for his ministry,
