commentary recommendations for Daniel

Just moving on to Daniel after Esther. Can you recommend some good commentaries - explaining Daniel rather than applying it. I think the primary emphasis of a commentary should be on understanding the original context.

My pastor did his doctoral dissertation on Daniel and has written a wee book called The Visions of Daniel Fulfilled. He's made it available here and includes a bibliography.

In addition, he's been going through the book of Daniel in his sermons for several months (with a few scheduled interruptions). The audio and slide shows are available here.

Our pastor and elders subscribe to post-millennial eschatology; therefore, his explanations of the book of Daniel explains the prophecies and how and when they came to pass.

The best commentaries on Daniel are by Iain Duguid, Tremper Longman, E.J. Young, and Sinclair Ferguson.

I agree with three out of four. I am not a Longman fan. Allan Harman's is a better choice.

I would recommend E.J. Young's , Robert Dick Wilson's, Michael P.V. Barrett's and James Montgomery Boice. E.J. Young is probably considered the staple commentary on Daniel. Robert Dick Wilson addresses textual and historical issues in the book if I remember correctly. Michael P.V. Barrett explains the text of Daniel, he is a Hebrew/O.T. seminary professor, and one of the primary purpose for his writing the commentary is to attack open theology, which is a major issue in the church today. James Montgomery Boice is probably the least towards what you are looking for because he does make the text very applicational, but he also does a fantastic job of explaining the text in a very clear and concise manner.

I believe that Boice recommended Calvin's Commentary as one of the best.

Boice does recommend Calvin in his book, but I have not been through all of Calvin's commentary. Boice said that one of the reasons why Calvin's commentary has been so highly regarded throughout the years is because of the fact that he wasn't as pointed towards the specific issues of his own day, as Luther's commentary was, and he made it very applicational to the church in any age. Another thing that I like about Boice is that he seems to try to quote a lot of other classic commentators so that you can see what other people have to say about a difficult passage without having to open a lot of different books.

Overall, Boice is a very solid expositor of the Word of God. Calvin tends to be pretty solid on just about anything he covers as well though.

I used Young's and Duguid's commentaries two years ago when I preached through Daniel. Young was by far the more technical. Duguid's was more pastoral. They complimented each other well.

Thanks folks, I did a search and found Rushdoony recommended not for his eschatology, but for his take on the social implications which others don't notice.

I may get Sinclair Ferguson who I know from my time at the Tron (at the right price) and I will certainly check out the online resources (reinforcing racial stereotypes as I do so).
