Jeri and Ed, I am a big Steele fan. I was introduced to him through his piece on Wandering Thoughts and have purchased the Religious Tradesman and the Old Age book. I have read some of both, but am at a crossroads as neither fully apply to me at this stage, but some principles from both are very applicable to all!
Emily, thanks so much for the tips on his other work! That’s really nice to know, and that you’re such a fan. Yes, I find the Discourse on Old Age to be very applicable to all, as he states he intends it to be. It’s a good one for younger folk to read in order to be prepared for the temptations that are more particular to older age (or chronic illness, etc.)

What are your thoughts on Carl Trueman's work? I've heard good things and I think I have most if not all of his works, just waiting to get around to them.
Well, it's very good. "The Rise and Triumph" is a reasonably challenging read, and enough has been said in response/review given a few years have past. There's also his new book on the desecration of man. No doubt Trueman's historical and theological training affords much value in digging beneath the surface of culture and avoiding common pitfalls in analysis. I appreciate that he doesn't attempt to force his personal opinion upon the reader in every matter.
Speaking of historical background, I have recently been enjoying his WTS lectures on the Reformation, where he excels on lecturing about Luther, with some humour too.

I am reading this as well. Although it is an "easy" read in the sense that it's lucid and accessible, without a lot of complicated technical terminology - it is not a quick read. It takes some digesting.

But so far, it's very good.

A Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians by Martin Luther (The New Abridged Translation by THEODORE GRAEBNER, D.D.)

I just finished The Lord's Supper by Thomas Watson last night. I'm still trying to decide whether to start a new book or focus on finishing up Luther's (abridged) Galatians commentary.
I literally just bought that commentary from a local bookstore. I haven't gotten into it yet but I'm excited. Thomas Watsons work is phenomenal. I love the Puritans.

I'm currently working through 2 Kings and Judges at the moment.

Theology wise I'm just going through the WCF and Hiedelberg Catechism as I continue to refresh myself. Really trying to focus deeply on the Scriptures right now.

It's a great commentary! I love how Luther is so clear throughout it that The Gospel is for you. I have a lot of different highlights saved that I go back and read through. Watson's book was really good as well! I need to look more into his works.

What section of 2 Kings and Judges are you in currently? Any main thoughts on the two so far?

About halfway through. Came across the following letter from pope Stephen (ca. 756) to the Franks I just had to share. Quite astounding for pope Stephen to send the letter as if it were from Peter, and to threaten damnation if the Franks did not defend Rome against the Lombards!

ALSO, THE THIRD LETTER, WHICH POPE STEPHEN RELAYED TO LORD PIPPIN THE KING, AND CHARLES, AND CARLOMAN, AND TO THE WHOLE POPULACE OF THE FRANKS (RECOUNTED IN THE NAME OF SAINT Peter), AFTER THE AFOREMENTIONED POPE WAS HIMSELF IN FRANCIA, AND WISHING A SECOND TIME TO OBTAIN HELP AGAINST THE LOMBARDS

Peter, called an Apostle by Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God (who reigned with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit before all ages, and in former times¹⁶ was incarnated and made human for the salvation of us all; according to the wishes of the glorious Father, He redeemed us with His precious blood, just as He announced through His holy prophets in the holy scriptures) and through me the entire Catholic, Apostolic and Roman Church of God, the head of all the Churches of God (founded – through the blood of our Redeemer – upon solid stone¹⁷), and Stephen the protector of said nourishing Church [all pray that] for the rescue of this same holy Church of God, and the Roman populace trusted to me, from the hands of our persecutors, grace, peace and strength be granted by our Lord God to you most distinguished men Pippin, Charles and Carloman, the three kings, and to the most holy bishops, abbots, priests and all the pious monks, and even to the dukes, counts and to all the armies generally and to the people dwelling in Francia.

I am Peter the apostle
, so called by Christ, the Son of the living God through a decision of supreme clemency, [and] I was preordained by His command to be the illuminator of the whole world. This our Lord God confirms: 'Go, teach all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit;'¹⁸ and again 'Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them.'¹⁹ And entrusting all his flocks to me, his lowly servant and chosen apostle, He said: 'Feed my sheep, feed my lambs;'²⁰ and further: 'you are Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatever you shall bind on earth, shall be bound also in heaven: and whatever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed also in heaven.'²¹ On this account, everyone who has fulfilled what they have heard me preach should trust with complete confidence that their sins in this world [shall be] forgiven by order of God, and that they will go pure and unstained into that [sc. eternal] life; and, indeed, since the illumination of the Holy Spirit shines in your gleaming hearts, [and since] you have become lovers of the holy and singular Trinity through your acceptance of the preached Word of the Gospel, without doubt your hope of future reward is kept bound up with this Roman and apostolic Church of God trusted to me.

And so, I Peter, apostle of God, who have adopted you as my sons, appealing to all your affection, furthermore urge [you] to defend this Roman city and populace trusted to me by God from the hands of its enemies, as well as to rescue the house where my body rests from the pollution by the gentiles
, and I steadfastly implore²² and admonish [you] to liberate the Church of God entrusted to me by divine command, because [all these] suffer the greatest afflictions and oppressions [at the hands of] the wretched Lombard people. Have no doubt, my most beloved²³ [sons], and rest assured: that by myself²⁴ we compel and oblige you with strong oaths in this exhortation (just as if I stood alive before you, in the flesh), because we hold all you, the people of the Franks, in special regard amongst all other peoples,²⁵ according to the promise that we received from that same Lord God, our Redeemer. Therefore I [being] a sort of reflection,²⁶ implore and admonish and bind you with firm obligation, [you] most Christian kings Pippin, Charles and Carloman, and all [you] clerics²⁷ – bishops, abbots, priests – and every pious monk, and all the judges, [and] likewise the dukes, counts and the whole people of the kingdom of the Franks. And just as though I – Peter, apostle of God – stood alive and present before you, in the flesh, in the same manner you should firmly believe that the words of exhortation address you. This is because I am not absent from you in spirit, though I am absent in body, seeing that it is written 'He that accepts a prophet in the name of a prophet, accepts a prophet's reward.'²⁸

What is more, Our Lady, mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary, [stands] with us, imploring and binding you with weighty obligations. She admonishes and commands you, and so do the thrones and dominions²⁹ and the whole host of the celestial army, and even the martyrs and confessors of Christ and all those who please God completely. And with us they exhort, adjure and implore you to take pity on this Roman city, trusted to me by the Lord God, and on the Lord's flocks dwelling in it, and even on the holy Church of God entrusted to me by the Lord. Defend and liberate it with all haste from the hands of our Lombard oppressors, lest – heaven forbid – they defile my body, which endured torments for the Lord Jesus Christ, and my home, where [my body] rests by order of God; lest by own people be mangled and butchered by those Lombard people, who are guilty of perjury in this great deceit and are proven violators of the holy Scriptures. So lend, with God's help, your strongest protection to my Roman people, your brothers, entrusted to me by God in this life. In this way I, Peter, chosen as Apostle of God, will repay you both in this life and on the day of judgment to come, by providing protection in turn (so that clear shining dwellings are prepared for you in God's kingdom), and by offering you the rewards of eternal recompense and the unending joys of heaven – provided that you have very speedily defended my Roman city and my own people, your Roman brothers, from the hands of the evil Lombards.

Hurry, hurry – by God, true and living, I exhort and implore you – hurry, and help, before the fountain of life, whence you were refreshed and reborn, goes dry: before that little leftover spark³⁰ from a roaring fire, whence you received³¹ your own light, is extinguished; before your spiritual mother, the holy Church of God – within which you hope to attain eternal life – is laid low, overrun, profaned and defiled by wicked men. I implore you, my most cherished adopted sons, by the grace of the holy Spirit, I implore you, and indeed – before God the redoubtable Creator of all – I exhort and admonish you, I, Peter apostle of God, and with me the holy catholic and apostolic Church of God, which the Lord trusted to me: do not suffer this Roman city to perish, [this city] in which the Lord set my body, and which he entrusted to me and set as the foundation of the faith.

Liberate [this city] and its Roman people, your brothers, and never allow it to be overrun by the Lombard people: in this fashion, you will spare your [own] provinces and possessions from being overrun by gentiles, unknown to you.³² Do not let me be separated from my Roman people: in this fashion, you will not be kept away or separated from the kingdom of God and the eternal life. For whatever you ask of me, I will supply to you, and particularly I will provide protection. Help my Roman people, your brothers, and strive righteously and liberate us in the end; for no one receives the crown, except he who has striven lawfully.³³ And you should strive vigorously to liberate the holy Church of God, lest you perish for eternity. Dearest [sons]: I beseech³⁴ you, I beseech [you] as before, and I utterly implore you, by the living God: you should in no way permit this Roman city of mine and the people living within it to be maimed by the Lombard people any more. This way you will not be maimed and tortured, body and soul, in the eternal and inextinguishable Tartarean fire, accompanied by the devil and his pernicious angels. And let not the sheep of the Lord's flock, namely, the Roman people, trusted to me by God, be further scattered; this way the Lord will not scatter you and cast you down, like the Israelite people were scattered.³⁵

Indeed, it is clear that your people of the Franks are better disposed toward me, Peter apostle of God, than any other peoples 'beneath the heavens'.³⁶ As such, through the hands of my vicar I entrust you with the Church, which the Lord handed over to me, so that you may liberate it from the hands of its enemies. Indeed, you should have absolutely no doubt that I – servant of God, his chosen Apostle – have helped you amidst all your troubles, whenever you have called upon me, and granted you victory over your enemies through the strength of God: [and have no doubt that] in the future³⁷ I will grant [such things] none the less, if you hurry very speedily to liberating this my Roman city. Remember also how I made the enemies of the holy Church of God fall before you when they assailed you in battle, even though you were small in number against them. Strive, therefore, to fulfill my warning speedily, so that you rightly deserve to obtain my help, through the Grace which was given to me by our Lord God Christ.

And now, my most cherished sons, I have openly admonished you. If you speedily obey, it will redound to your great reward: aided by my support, you will overcome all your enemies in the present life, and long-surviving³⁸ you shall eat the good of the land,³⁹ and you will – without doubt — enjoy eternal life. But if [you do not] — something we trust will not happen — and you offer [some] delay, or excuse for less than speedily fulfilling our exhortation to liberate this my Roman city and the populace dwelling in it and the holy apostolic Church of God entrusted to me by the Lord along with its protector, know this: we, through the authority of the holy and singular Trinity [and] through the Grace of the apostleship which I was given me by Lord Christ, [will/can] exclude you from the kingdom of God and the eternal life for disobeying our exhortation.

Instead, may God and our Lord Jesus Christ (who, in redeeming us with His precious blood, led us to the light of truth and made us preachers and illuminators to the whole world) allow you to perceive, understand and set about these things very speedily, so that you hurry all the more quickly to rescue this Roman city and its populace and the holy Church of God entrusted to me by the Lord, so that he mercifully orders you to be kept in the present life into old age, safe and triumphant (just as He does for those trusting in his command); and so that, with the support of my intercession for you, He allows you to merit more abundantly the gifts of His remuneration with the saints and His elect in the world to come.

Farewell.

Farewell.

Planning to finish the book tomorrow. Posting any more of these letter would probably deserve its own thread, but perhaps just one more extraordinary example of a papal letter that contains what I can only describe as bloated desperation, this time from pope Stephen to kings Charlemagne and Carloman. Pope Stephen forbids, on pain of anathema, that the Frankish kings' family members marry with Lombard royalty. Pope Stephen makes either an appeal to kinism or is lying about the Lombards (who were, as I understand it, Nicene by this time). What is hilarious is that the very next letter contained in this codex contains a complete 180 degree turn by pope Stephen, who calls King Desiderius of the Lombards an "excellent and God-protected son" for intervening in an assassination attempt... on his own life!

...Something has been brought to our notice that we mention with great sorrow of heart, namely that King Desiderius of the Lombards is urging your excellence to unite his daughter in marriage to one of you brothers. If this is indeed so, this is beyond doubt the devil's prompting and not so much marital union as wickedly concocted cohabitation; for we know well from scriptural history that many forsook God's commandments as the result of an unrighteous union with a foreign nation and deviated into grave crimes.³⁶³ Most excellent sons and great kings, this would be such folly that it must frankly be stated that your illustrious Frankish race, which surpasses all peoples, and the resplendent and most noble offspring of your authority would thereby (God forbid!) be sullied by the treacherous and most foul Lombard race, which has never been included in the rollcall of the peoples, and from whose stock a race of lepers would assuredly be born. For no one with a sound mind could imagine that such celebrated kings as yourselves would choose to be infected with such a hateful and abominable contagion; for 'what fellowship has light with darkness, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?'³⁶⁴

Most kindly and benign kings, appointed by God, you have already by the will and counsel of God been joined in lawful marriage through the bidding of your father, and received, as illustrious and noble kings, most beautiful wives from your own fatherland, that is, from the noble race of the Franks. It is your duty to remain faithful to your love for them; most certainly, you are not permitted to divorce them, marry other wives, and enter into consanguinity with a foreign nation.

For none of your forebears, neither your father, grandfather or great-grandfather, took a wife from another kingdom or a foreign nation; and who of your most noble race ever mixed or defiled himself with the foul race of the Lombards, in the way in which you are now being urged (may God avert it!) to accept pollution from this horrible race? No one who has taken a wife from a foreign race has ever escaped guilt. Observe, I beg you, how many and how great rulers, as a result of turning away from God's precepts through foreign marriages and doing the will of their foreign wives, were swept into wild excesses and suffered dire misfortune.

It is impious that the thought should ever occur to you of taking other wives in addition to those you took originally. Such a crime does not fit you in the least, since you hold to the law of God and prohibit others from acting in this manner. This is what pagan nations do; but perish the thought that you might do this, for you are fully Christian, 'a holy race and royal priesthood',³⁶⁵ sanctified with a heavenly blessing by the hands of the vicar of the blessed Peter; you must beware of becoming implicated in such crimes.

Bear in mind, most excellent sons, that our predecessor of sacred memory, the lord Pope Stephen, charged your father of eminent memory not to presume to divorce your lady mother; and he, as a truly most Christian king, heeded his salutary admonition.

There is something else that your excellence should remember: you gave a pledge to the blessed Peter and to his aforementioned vicar and his successors that you would be the friends of our friends and the enemies of our enemies, just as we have remained firm in our fidelity to the same pledge. How can you now act against your own souls and think of forming a union with our enemies, since this perjured Lombard race, which is always fighting against the church of God and invading our Roman province, has shown itself to be our enemy?

This too I ask you to recall to your memory: when the emperor Constantine urged your most mild parent of holy memory to give as a bride for his son your most noble sister Gisela [...]³⁶⁶ that it was not permissible for you either to be joined to another nation or to act in any way against the will of the pontiffs of the apostolic see. Why are you now trying to act against the apostolic mandates and the will of the vicar of the prince of the apostles, which is something that your father never did? Are you unaware that it is not our wretchedness that you are rejecting but the blessed Peter, whom we represent, albeit unworthily? For Scripture says, 'Who receives you, receives me,' and 'Who rejects you, rejects me.'³⁶⁷

Remember, I beg you, most excellent sons, how the lord your father made you vouch for him when, promising by your souls, he made a pledge to blessed Peter and his vicar our predecessor of holy memory the lord Pope Stephen that you would remain firm in fidelity towards the holy church, in obedience to all the pontiffs of the apostolic see, and in perfect love. Subsequently you and your father, through envoys and in writing, often made the same promise to our predecessor the lord Pope Paul. After the decease of your father of holy memory, you yourselves both through your envoys and by letter, and also through our most faithful *nomenclator*³⁶⁸ Sergius and other envoys of ours, made us a pledge that like your father you would persevere in this same promise of yours to God's holy church and in fidelity to us.

Recall also to your memory, I beg you, how the lord Pope Stephen on his passing away exhorted you by letter with an earnest and solemn appeal to remain constant in the love of God and of his holy church and in perfect affection towards the pontiffs of the apostolic see, and to fulfil in all respects the pledge you had made to the same apostle of God. This, now, is the promise you made!

How great were the labours undergone by this eminent and most blessed pontiff, who, despite his ill health, exposed himself to the dangers of so long a journey! If the Lord had not been on his side, his labour would have been in vain,³⁶⁹ and the journey on which this our predecessor travelled to Francia would have proved disastrous, since our enemies were now puffed up with arrogance even more than before. But behold: we now see happening what we feared, our joy is turned into grief,³⁷⁰ 'the latest ills are worse than the first,'³⁷¹ and where we expected light to rise upon us, 'darkness has broken forth'.³⁷²

For this reason the blessed Peter prince of the apostles, to whom God entrusted the keys of the kingdom of heaven and the power to bind and unloose both in heaven and on earth,³⁷³ appeals to your excellence by means of our misfortune. At the same time, we ourselves, together with all the bishops, presbyters and other priests and all the leading men and clergy of our holy church, also the abbots and all the religious dedicated to divine worship, as well as the nobility and officials and all our Roman people of this province, implore you most solemnly – through the living and true God, who is the judge of the living and the dead, and by the ineffable power of his divine majesty and the dread day of the future judgment, when all of us, princes and potentates and the whole human race will attend in terror, and also by all the divine mysteries and the most holy body of the blessed Peter – that neither of you brothers presume in any way to take in marriage the daughter of King Desiderius of the Lombards, and again that your most noble sister the lovable Gisela be not given to Desiderius' son, and that you do not dare to divorce your wives in any manner whatsoever.

Even more than this, however, bear in mind that you promised the blessed Peter prince of the apostles to put up manly opposition to the Lombards as enemies of ours, and to press them firmly to return the property of God's holy church to the Roman state, because, breaking all the promises they made to you, they continue to oppress us daily; they show not the slightest intention of returning anything to us, and indeed invade our territory. It is the merest assertion when they claim in the presence of your envoys that they are going to actualize our rights, for nothing is put into effect, and they have restored to us none of our rights at all.

Note that, in order to inform you of all our troubles, we have sent our envoys, namely our beloved son Peter the presbyter and Pamphilius *defensor regionarius* of our holy church, whom we have instructed in detail about the distress that is threatening us and about particular complaints, for them to communicate to your royal dignity. We beg you to receive them with your habitual kindness, to incline your ears, inspired by God, to our requests, and to give orders for the complete liberation and raising up of your spiritual mother God's holy church, and for the defence of the province you rescued, so that you may receive a perfect reward from our God the just judge through the intercession of the blessed Peter prince of his apostles.

We have placed this our present exhortation and petition on the *confessio* of the blessed Peter, upon which we offer sacrifice and offerings to our God; it is from the same sacred *confessio* that we are sending it to you with tears. If anyone, contrary to our wishes, presumes to act against this our solemn and earnest exhortation, may he know that by the authority of my master the blessed Peter prince of the apostles he is bound with the bond of an anathema, excluded from the kingdom of God, and consigned to eternal fire together with the devil and his cruel pomps and all the impious. But may whoever observes and upholds this exhortation of ours be glorified with heavenly blessings by the Lord our God and share in the joys of an eternal reward together with all the saints and elect of God.

May grace from on high keep your excellence safe and well.
