Puritan Board Doctor
Earlier this week (Wednesday, if memory serves), New Testament scholar D. A. Carson formally announced his retirement. Carson announced that the reason is Parkinson's Disease, and he mentioned both its physical and cognitive debilitations that are affecting him (he said that, in 2015, he tried to convince a doctor that it was 2008). He made his announcement through the Gospel Coalition.

He said also that he'll now work to get rid of all his books so that his wife, Joy (they'll be married 50 years next year), won't have that burden after he's gone.

Carson mentioned that "there's nothing wrong with me that a good general resurrection can't fix."

Today (December 21) is his 78th birthday.

Wow I had no idea he was that old! I've never seen what he looks like, but I've read his sermons and his books! Awe this is so sad. God has called back so many greats in the last few years. Please pray for his wife. (and him as well ofc.)

I really enjoyed his book "The Gagging of God", on Postmodernism. I am sorry he was not able to update it.

Also I want to reread his book 'praying with Paul' sometime.

Has anyone read this volume edited by Carson and O'Brien?
A one or two sentence synopsis would be very helpful. I started it this morning.
Justification and Variegated Nomism
Volume II
The Paradoxes of Paul
edited by
D. A. Carson, Peter T. O’Brien,
and Mark A. Seifrid

Yes. I have it too. Pretty good. I think better things have come out since then however.

I've appreciated the works of Carson I've interacted with. He had a very helpful lecture series on The New Perspective on Paul that I remember appreciating in seminary. His "Exegetical Fallacies" are a wonderful contribution. The Gospel Coalition - too much of a mixed bag.

Sorry I didn't fully answer the question. Carson and others seek to rebut the NPP in a series of essays ranging from understanding the Reformation correctly to proper lexical exegesis.
