Daniel´s 70 weeks;

Daniel 9: 24"Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place.[a] 25Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. 26And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are decreed. 27And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator."

We must first focus on the covenantal framework of these 70 weeks. This passage demands that we focus on the fulfillment of covenantal redemption in the ministry of Christ.

Here´s why;

-The passage begins with "œseventy weeks" or "œseven weeks" or literally seven sevens. This results in a value of forty nine.

This leads up to the redemptively significant year of Jubilee.

LEV 25:8"You shall count seven weeks[a] of years, seven times seven years, so that the time of the seven weeks of years shall give you forty-nine years.

Seventy represents ten seven week periods thus ten Jubilee´s. The seventy sevens point to a "œcomplete" "œredemptive" Jubilee. It is Christ who brings the "œUltimate Jubilee."

Luke 4:17And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
20And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21And he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."
Isaiah 61
1The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;[a]
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
3to grant to those who mourn in Zion--
to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.[c]

The time period being given to Daniel here is the period in which the Messianic redemption was to be accomplished.

Verse 25 talks about "œrestoring Jerusalem". This means it is to be restored to all it´s former glory and this did not occur until the middle of the fifth century B.C. Since the "˜seven weeks" (or 490 years) is specifically set off by Daniel (when he speaks of the seven weeks and 62 weeks) it seems that this 490 years was the time to witness the successful conclusion of the rebuilding of Jerusalem.

The second part of the sixty two weeks extends from the conclusion of the rebuilding of Jerusalem to the introduction of Israel´s Messiah at His baptism when he begins his public ministry. This would be sometime around A.D.26

Verse 24 is clearly speaking of Christ´s first advent.

to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place.

FINISHING OF TRANSGRESSION: Daniels prayer of confession was regarding Israel´s sins. This prophecy is focus is on Israel. So, the "œfinishing of transgression" is obviously the finishing of Israel´s sins or the "œcompleting" of her transgressions against God. This occurs within Christ´s ministry when they finally reject Him and send Him to the cross.

SINS ARE SEALED UP: This relates to the finishing of transgression! Since Israel rejected the Messiah and instead killed Him God reserves punishment for her. God reserved (sealed up) punishment for Israel until AD70.

RECONCILIATION FOR INIQUITY: This clearly refers to Christ´s atoning death, which is the ultimate atonement that the temple sacrifices looked. (Heb 9:26)

EVERLASTING RIGHTEOUSNESS: Christ´s final atonement establishes righteousness. This speaks of the objective accomplishment within the 70-week period.

SEAL UP VISION AND PROPHECY: Christ fulfills and confirms the prophecy.

TO ANNOINT THE MOST HOLY: This refers to Christ´s baptismal anointing.

MARK 1:14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."

The time that was fulfilled was the 69th week!

THE 70th WEEK

Verse 26 says the anointed one shall be cut off.

This speaks of the Messiah. The Hebrew word for "œcut off" means "œdeath penalty" and refers to a violent death.

Messiah´s "œcutting off" is due to Israel´s completing her transgression and bringing it to culmination by killing the Messiah.

The Messiah came to "œconfirm the covenant" which He did by His death on the cross.

This covenant is "œfirm" because it brings about everlasting righteousness.

The covenant will be confirmed with many for one week. The "œmany" refer to the faithful of Israel. Although the entire Nation will not receive salvation, many will.

All of this will occur in the MIDDLE of the 70th week.

We know that Christ´s 3 and one half year ministry was focused on the Jews. This was within the first half of the 70th week. For another 3 and one half years the disciples focused primarily on the Jews as well beginning first in Judea.

The end of the 70th week is not as clear as all of this, but it appears to be at the stoning of Stephen. At this time the good news seemed to turn toward the Gentiles.

SO we have:

The 70th week begins with Christ´s baptism and anointing.

After 3 ½ years (middle of the 70th week) Christ was crucified.

At that time Messiah brought an end to sacrifice and offering. The Temple veil was torn top to bottom as evidence that the sacrificial system was legally disestablished in the eyes of God.

NOW..the last parts of verse 26 and 27.

-Messiah is to be cut off
-The city and sanctuary is to be destroyed

Remember that God said He had "œsealed up Israel´s transgression! God reserved punishment for the cutting off of Messiah. God sent His punishment in AD70 when the temple and City were destroyed by the Roman armies.

Good job, Adam.

Any thoughts about what, if anything, marks the end of the 70th week?

The thought is that the stoning of Stephen is the end of the 70th week, but we can't be 100% certain. But it was at that time the the gospel went out primairly to the Gentiles.

God tells us that He shall confirm the covenant with many.Daniel 9:27.

Who are the many?

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins."Matthew 1:21

"Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Mathew 20:28

The many are the elect,the chosen ones,the church,not just the elect Jews.

"And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the CONSUMMATION, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate". Dan 9:27

God clearly states "until the consummation".That is the end of the 70th week.The last day,judgment day,The end of time.

Jesus strengthened the covenant, as you say, by His death on the cross.

"For where a covenant is, there must also of necessity be the death of the covenantor. For a Covenant is of FORCE after men are dead: otherwise it is of no Strength at all while the covenantor liveth." Hebrews 9:16

A will, is not legally binding ,till the death of the testator,Christ,which happened at the cross.Unless the testator dies ,there is no legal value to the will,and that is one of the reasons why the Lord had to die.
