eBay sniping services

I have had some "unpleaseantness" with the sniping service that I have used (Bidslammer) and have decided never to use them again. Is anyone here able to reccomend an alternative?

A service called GavelThief has been getting rave reviews but has suddenly closed down. Ther reasons seem very interesting and while the homepage has dissapeared Google's cache of this page reads:

After long talks with eBay, we have made the executive decision to close down GavelThief for a little while for several reasons. Senior members of eBay's security staff have decided to do everything in their power to shut down GavelThief for reasons that they will not specify. One eBay support personnel with whom we spoke stated that GavelThief simply was too successful - it placed too many bids from too many users too close to the ends of the auctions it sniped. Although far more superior and more secure, GavelThief does not have the rapport with eBay that other auction sniping services seem to have. From eBay's perspective, we are just another liability with a large database that contains users' eBay login credentials (which by the way are very heavily encrypted).

Basically, if eBay truly wants to shut down an online auction sniping service, they can. eBay flags users' accounts and IP addresses for any type of suspicious activity (i.e. multiple users logging in from the same IP address, such as in the case of an online sniping service). Even if the auction sniping service switches servers, IP addresses, or domain names, those users' accounts are still flagged. Once the 'new' service logs into those users' accounts, server flagging starts all over again. The flags ensure that whoever is logging into an eBay account from the flagged IP address is forced to pass CAPTCHA verification before continuing. It is practically impossible at this point to successfully bypass eBay's CAPTCHA encryption.

For a dummy like me who is trying to make a little money to pay the bills on ebay, could someone tell me what an ebay sniping service is?

I don't shop nor sell on e-bay but it looks like it is a program people can sign up for that helps people bidding on an item get a final bid in before the close of the auction..

So if you are auctioning something off, and you have many bids, it may look like one person has the final bid but within seconds before the close of your auction you get a last minute bid come in..

I guess it would be great if a person really wanted an item they were bidding on..

Wow. I guess this might bring up questions regarding technology, Christian ethics, and the 8th/10th commandment (or at least the "Golden Rule").

A good, hard look at WLC 141-142 might at least give one pause before considering the use of such a service, I would think.

I did give this subject a lot of thought because as you suggest we have got to be really careful in our business dealings to ensure that we honour God in all we do.

I am happy with sniping as if everyone makes their highest bid (at whatever time) you get no advantage from sniping, those who lose out ae those that put a bid in but wish they had gone higher and to be honest that is their fault.

It cuts both ways, sometimes you miss winning an auctio because your snipe was not high enough and you have no time to raise the snipe. It is akin to sealed bids for an auction.
