I just stumbled across this advertisement for a church. This seeker sensitive stuff has gone too far.

That advert was for a particular meeting of a church, gathering 629. Investigation reveals this on their website:

Sunday night, December 19, was the last Gathering 6:29.

Many of you know we have been evaluating what we do on Sunday nights (several of you stayed for an extended feedback session a few weeks ago). When we started 6:29 our desire and vision was to reach people, around age 18-35, who were not connected to church, who might not be reached by what we do on Sunday morning.

Over the last 2 ½ years we have seen God use 6:29 in many powerful ways. Several people have been introduced, and reintroduced, to Christ through our Sunday night worship experience. Many people have exercised their spiritual gifts, served tirelessly, and have grown immeasurably through selfless giving of time, energy, and talents.

While we have seen God at work, we have not seen 6:29 grow numerically, and more importantly, in-depth of community over the last several months.

This has been a difficult decision and has come as a result of much prayer, fasting, seeking wise counsel, and discussion.

We know that many spiritual needs are being met through 6:29, and we want to be sure that your needs continue to be met through other ministries here at Sherwood Oaks. Below is some information that might be helpful.

May God bless you with a discontentment that can only be met through a deep relationship with Jesus.

I guess that God is "pro-choice" (of course determined by the councel of his will for his own glory).

And His answer was NO. (Follow the URL listed in the ad and see that Gathering 6:29 has been cancelled.)

It's really a shame that the seeker sensitive movement finds it necessary to portray fellow believers who do not share in their methods as "misguided religious types' who practice an "empty and safe religion".

I think this is so blatantly stereotypical that the very people they are trying to reach are seeing right through it. Do they really think people believe true Christianity is just "living your usual life of sin" and singing a few praise choruses? People are just smarter than that. People know what their doing is sin, love their sin, and know intuitively that true Christianity stands against it. It calls for a change, they know it, and they also know that there's much more fun to be had at the bar.

This whole angle to the Christian life I am questioning, as the majority on this site are. I'm amazed that anyone buys into it. Whenever I attend a church that is too self-consciously anything, be it TR-ish, BR-ish, Sonship-ish, postmodern, etc., I am immediately turned off. There is something very good about being "real", but it seems that the majority of the people that put this forward are some of the most copy cat folk I have ever met. They very rarely come across as real, but I feel like they are trying to implement some techniques they read in a book.

I do, however, like that there was very little gathering at The Gathering. Hopefully this trend will continue.
