my cousin made a pretty fast computer for me, and it all cost $500. DVD, CD Burner, lots of space, 512 MB. The only things that had to be purchased were the monitor and the speakers.
I'm not going to be suckered into the Dell, Compaq, HP, Apple thingies.
My cousin has become a real expert at making computers. He simply purchases all the parts from TigerDirect and within a week and a half, he delivers the computer to you. Being a family member (my sluggish methods of payment is acceptable)
I just hope he starts making laptops soon.
I'm not going to be suckered into the Dell, Compaq, HP, Apple thingies.

We've always had desktops, this is our first laptop. It takes a little getting use to the keyboard and the touchie pad (instead of the mouse), but all-in-all we like it. I especially like how much space is saved and the fact that I can use it upstairs where the rest of the family is instead of down in the basement.

Very cool, me and my wifes new lap tops should be coming soon. I can also make desk tops but prefer lap tops. Making them would be much, much harder from my experience. I know guys who know way more than I do and they won't even touch lap tops, let alone MAKE one.

Dh and I had our own business doing that over 10 yeras ago... but eventually the demand for our services got squashed by mail order "pick your parts and get it shipped to you cheap" The 'computer shopper' magazine was much fatter and more popular than it is now.
Not to take away from Bob's new system though... new dells are a sweet thing! !!! :bigsmile:

$500 INCLUDING legal copies of Windows?
One of the downfalls of "build it yourself" is having to pay so much $ for the Operating System (unless you're using Linux).
There is no justification for using pirated software...I was convicted of this one time years ago, when I was going to make a copy of some Bible software...then it hit me. (yes, I'm that dense).
Make sure that if you get a friend, cousin, neighbor, etc. to build a system, that it's not using stolen software.
I don't work in the SW industry, I just have a strong conviction about it.

Purely self thought. Its amazing how he became an expert overnight, even in Networking.
All he does is go to work, Jog, come home, and hit the Technology. The dude spends like 6 hours a day with computer related stuff.
You buy laptops, you don't make them.

I have built and bought and I think it boils down to what you are trying to get the computer to do and how comfortable you are if it fails. My Gateway 2000 had every part except the floppy drive replaced by the time I retired it. My Dell 333 MHz (circa 1998) has been a wonderful machine for electronics reliability. Windows is another story.
Although I think Linux is still lacking, too. My latest computer, an HP laptop, has been good to me so far.
I think I will build my next desktop, though, unless I buy a Mac. I am looking to build a machine that uses about as much power as a laptop so I can hook it up to solar panels when I get the money to invest in them. One of our elders has a CAD based home business and just put together a computer with a 550 Watt power supply. Now that's a lot of heat.
