As most of you know, I will be getting married June 3rd. Erin and I would lke to sing a congregational Psalm to the tune of Ellacombie (Psalm 78 in the Trinity Psalter).

The lyrics for this Psalm are probably not the best suited for our wedding, and are looking for a Psalm that would be a better fit.

Any suggestions??? :sing:

I have nothing brother. I'm not familiar with that. Congratulations on getting married soon and may God bless you both.

How many stanzas, Jeff? Or do you want a complete Psalm?

here is the verse:

5 In them he set the sun a tent;
Who, bridegroom-like, forth goes
From's chamber, as a strong man doth
to run his race rejoice.

oo! oo!

Psalm 128
Words: The Scottish Psalter

1 Blessed is each one that fears the Lord,
and walketh in his ways;
2 For of thy labour thou shalt eat,
and happy be always.

3 Thy wife shall as a fruitful vine
by thy house' sides be found:
Thy children like to olive-plants
about thy table round.

4 Behold, the man that fears the Lord,
thus bless-ed shall he be.
5 The Lord shall out of Zion give
his blessing unto thee:

Thou shalt Jerus'lem's good behold
whilst thou on earth dost dwell.
6 Thou shalt thy children's children see,
and peace on Israel.

2 verses - perfect length for a wedding...if I do say so myself!

JD - I like it!

Here is the version from the RPCNA's Psalter, The Book of Psalms for Singing:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How blessed all who fear the LORD, and walk within His ways!
You'll eat your labor's fruit, be blessec, and prosper in your days.

Your wife will as a fruitful vine within your house be found;
Your children will as olive plants Your table gather round.

Behold thus shall the man be blessed who truly fears the LORD!
The LORD from Zion grant to you His blessing and reward.

An may you see Jerus'lem's good All days on earth you dwell.
May you your children's children see, and peace on Israel.

Time to run it by the wifey (to be)!

I like that the first B section highlights the wife and children. :D

The Lord's richest blessings on you and your wife to be - what a glorious blessing marriage is!

I second JD's Psalm 128, hope the meter works...

If you need more ideas, specifically from the Trinity Psalter, look at (parts of) Psalms 107, 21, 106, 119 (II), 118...

From the Genevean Book of Church Order (The Form of Marriage):

Then the minister commends them to God, in this or suchlike sort: The Lord sanctify and bless you; the Lord pour the riches of his grace upon you, that you may please him, and live together in holy love to your lives' end. So be it.

Then is sung the 128th Psalm, "Blessed are they that fear the Lord," etc, or some other, pertaining to the same purpose.

Psalm 127 also comes to mind of course. 127A & 128A is CM in the BPS (RP psalter). Ellacombe is CMD (common meter double) so you could sing 127A or 128A to it by singing two stanzas through the tune.

how...providential! :D

Psalms 127 and 128 are wonderful for a wedding. Good recommendations. Psalm 45, of course, is THE wedding psalm, and Psalm 45C (tune Diademata) is lovely.

Ellacombe (note spelling) is CMD and some other perhaps suitable psalms that may correspond to that meter include 24A, 34A and 37B.

See this resource for purposes of matching up types of tunes with selections from the American Covenanter psalter.

Also, Jeff, for the reception here is a little suggested selection from an Australian singer/composer with whom I have corresponded (this song appeared in the 1994 film Blown Away):

THE IRISH WEDDING SONG

"Here they stand hand in hand they've exchanged wedding bands
Today is the day of their dreams and their plans,
and all we who love them just wanted to say.
May God bless this couple who married today.
In good times and bad times in sickness and health
may they know that riches are not needed for wealth
and help them face problems they'll meet on their way
Oh god bless this couple who married today.
May they find peace of mind comes to all who are kind
May the rough times ahead become triumphs in time
May their children be happy each day
Oh God bless this family who started today
As they go may they know every love that was shown
And as life it gets shorter may their feelings grow
Wherever they travel wherever they stay
May God bless this couple who married today"
