Historic Premillennism

What are the best books (or lecture series, if available) for historic premil? Thanks.

Well, it depends on whose "Historic Premillenialism" is under consideration. Basically it is now a vague catch all category for all premils who are not dispensational i.e. that aren't pretrib.

George Eldon Ladd is considered the "gold standard" of historic premils and his works are definitely germane. I understand that Grudem, Piper and a good many others basically identify with his point of view. The Blessed Hope may be the place to start reading Ladd.

However, Barry Horner (among others) in Future Israel has proven that Ladd modified historic premillenialism to a significant degree and that the historic premillenialism of men like Horatius Bonar, J.C. Ryle and C.H. Spurgeon differed significantly from Ladd's in several respects. Our own Dennis McFadden who was a student of Ladd's at Fuller Seminary has noted that Ladd to a large degree was operating from what amount to amil presuppositions, but remained premil largely due to his interpretation of Rev. 20.

It gets a little more complicated because C.H. Spurgeon and Horatious Bonar held to Covenant Theology whereas Horner does not.

A helpful book on the older Historic Premill is Nathaniel West's the 1000 year reign of Christ. This is a classic. There is also a new book out on this but I have not read it -
A Case for Historic Premillennialism: An Alternative to "Left Behind" Eschatology :: Last Things (Eschatology) :: Doctrine/Theology :: Monergism Books :: Reformed Books and Resources for Christians

I just got in the mail yesterday the newly published A Case for Historic Premillennialism: An Alternative to "Left Behind" Eschatology edited by Craig L. Blombery and Sung Wook Chung. Will be reading this book next week. Many of the writers are connected with Denver Seminary.

I did enjoy George Ladd's A Blessed Hope, but am not aware how he changed the views of Spurgeon and others.

Cordially,
Carol

It does certainly get complicated, but what Spurgeon, Bonar, Ryle and probably West (although I'm not as familiar with him) had in common was a belief that Israel would be physically restored to the land at the end of the age, an idea that is generally viewed as a dispensational distinctive today.

It's probably less accurate to say that he changed the views of Spurgeon than it is to say that it is just typically assumed today that the views of Spurgeon and other earlier non-dispensational premils were the same as Ladd's because they are all considered to be "Historic Premil."
