Talk about a website set up to try and guilt you into giving money.
By the way, I didn't need the website to know that, materially, I am extremely wealthy compared to the rest of the world because I've seen it firsthand. We attend an international Church. Every time people come to our apartment in Okinawa, which is modest by American standards, the Phillipinos, Chinese, and Japanese always remark how big it is. Meanwhile, Sonya and I are given to grumbling at times that it's not bigger. I'm such a wretch at times.
One evening we had a Filipino couple over and they were just overwhelmed. "This place is so nice. Only the very richest people in the Phillipines live in a place like this and even they don't have places this nice." It was very humbling and embarrassing.
Wedding and baby showers for couples of other countries are remarkable in how little that couple actually asks for to set up a household. The number of kitchen items they ask for can be counted on two hands.

Strange. I was playing with that thing just to see how it changed when you enter different income levels. You can never climb above being the 107,656th richest person in the world. It's the same whether you earn $1 Million/year or $10 Billion/year or higher. Must be a bug in the code.
I talk to most people in my neighborhood and they make about 2-3 USD per day. I talked to one guy last week who made 100,000 RP per month (about 10 bucks).
The price of rice has risen 15% due to a drought and the gov't is about to kill all backyard chickens to prevent bird flu (I doubt if the gov't ever gets organized enough to do this, though), so things are even getting tougher.
Yes, we are rich. Even if the source of this website is from a liberal do-gooder org who wants to redistribute wealth, they have made a great and effective tool to show us where we stand in the world.

Trevor I have a friend who works as a teacher in Medan, Indonesia. She says she makes about $100 per MONTH. Is that about right? I think she's the only working at the time in her household. I remember a few years back I went to Ukraine (been there 5 times) & I had set aside $100 per day spending money, already had my flat paid for etc. I thought by our standards that was not much so I was going to have to stretch my money to get by on $100 a day. Man I lived & ate like a sultan in Ukraine!!! It really made me realize how we have it made here in the USA. Really puts things into perspective.
100 USD per month in Indonesia is normal. Sometimes an extended family lives in a very small house to share expenses and a large proportion of kids live with the extended family b/c the parents cannot afford them. Most meals consist of rice, rice and more rice with a little smattering of tofu or tempe. A lot of my neighbors don't have concrete walls but matting.
