Hubby bought me my presents last night

Last night was the dinner for hubby's work. Everyone was pretty friendly. Two odd points of the evening: I'm looking for a specific fabric store, which led to coverings (all the gals there covered the usual prescribed white ones for their group, and I had my red floral snood on), which led to a question on how I'm doing with fitting in here...sigh. The other is when discussing background and the amish man said that he came from "all three races"...I asked him what he meant (knowing what is usually meant in that case), which puzzled him. We were discussing national backgrounds...he was going into the white, tan, black thing. Hubby stepped in and explained what I was getting at in not believing in races or the Shem, Ham, and Jepeth myth. They all looked clueless.

Anyhow, I enjoyed sitting next to the amish woman, very sweet lady. Afterwards it was suggested that we go window shop at the Christian bookstore next door (one we had never been in) so all four families headed over and started meandering. Hubby ended up finding and buying me the (only one in the store) Reformation Study Bible and a bible study from Nancy Leigh DeMoss. I'm thrilled!

We were the last ones out of there.

I'm still a bit puzzled by this head covering thing.

Isn't wearing a "red floral snood" as much as fashion statement as a sign of submission? Or was it just a cultural thing in this context, being with your husband's work associates?

reformation study bible??? your husband really knows his wife. congrats.

hopefully when my divorce if final, and I get a new wife, God willing, reformation study bibles will be the present of choice. And if my wife doesn't like it, I will blame Colleen. :P

The manner of my mentioning it is to show the cultural difference between myself and them. I'm not required by my church to have a certain type of covering. The group was mixed. We had Beachy Amish-Mennonite (smaller white plastic net with pleats and looped ties hanging in back-the ties are not used for anything more than identification), and Amish (this one had the full white, stiffened material, pleats and ties-her ears completely covered...most amish women wear the heart style though), and a Charity (white veil type of neck length that rest toward the back of the head).

My snood was not a fashion statement. However, if you look at coverings throughout history, most were not plain. I have more than one and I was wearing a plaid jumper with white blouse...it was the one I had that matched the most closely (I really need to get sewing and all my plain black, white, and blue ones have disappeared). I didn't think a long baby blue scarf would go and I'm not wearing my white veil because it looks close to Charity's veil and I'm not associated with that group. Not a fashion statement, but then I guess you don't wear white socks with black dress pants either, KWIM?

Here's a pink one...not a fashion statement...and most people don't think I'm trying make one with it.

Are you required by your church to wear any sort of heading covering in public? I guess I'm confused as to why you were covered at a (non ecclesiastical) dinner.

What I hear you saying is that "I needed one to go with my outfit." How is that not a fashion statement?

If it were not, then you would have but one color and you would not be concerned with whether or not people noticed if it went with the rest of your outfit.

I guess I didn't realize that the literal reading of 1 Cor. 11 created such a dilemma.

BTW, I don't claim to make any spiritual connection between wearing pants and/or sock, so your last comment is a non sequitur. That my socks match my pants is purely a fashion statement -- usually a bad statement in my case. :D

So I should intentionally choose a non-matching covering? Look through the Jewish sites at their coverings. They vary...they are different colors. Yet these women cover for religious reasons. Why can't it be for scriptural reasons and yet be pretty or matching also?

BTW, I am covering all the time because my husband has asked me to and especially last night since we were going to be praying.

Depends on whether the issue is theological or fashion.

A questionable standard at best. I believe this is based in talmudic traditions, not the Torah. And Jews get away with all sorts of "coverings", even wigs are counted as a covering in some quarters!!

I don't believe the purpose of the head covering is to draw attention to your head. If this is a spiritual adornment, then black or white is just as "pretty" as a floral pattern, spiritually speaking. Floral patterns please men, not God.

But you were not praying in the congregation in public worship, which is certainly the context of 1 Cor. 11. If it's not, then a man would never be permitted to wear a hat (v. 7).

As I said, I still don't get how the practice fits with the intent of 1 Cor. 11. I'm sorry for hijacking the thread.

Tom, thank you for highjacking the thread on your favorite issue to pick with me.

Again...my husband has asked me to should be enough. Given the context of the group-think mindset I am evironmentally located in at the moment, I have very good reason for my choice, fashion aside. I am not anabaptist, yet I cover. History again has shown that headcoverings were not mandated to be "plain". Heaven forbid someone should walk by you with a red or tan Bible instead of a black one.

I guess I should have gone bareheaded and intentionally disuaded ppl from any possibility of listening to any of my or my husband's christian testamony. You have NOT A CLUE the cultural circumstances faced here...regardless of the "in assembly" or "whenever praying and prophesying" aguements.

Gregg, he is enjoying it very much, thank you.
