John Owen - Crossway editions

I'm seeking insight on Crossway's editions of Owen's works compared to those reprinted by the Banner of Truth.
Does anyone have more insight based on the volumes that have been released please?

Essentially, I own the Banner set and am delving into Owen's theological treatises in more depth. Having begun a 'A display of Arminianism' I realise that there are numerous quotations and footnotes untranslated from original source languages, and it is rather disappointing not to know what they mean! As such I am contemplating purchasing relevant volumes of Crossway's editions where there is a a lot of newly translated material when I come to read them.

Perhaps some Owen scholars may have a better idea of which works contain a large quantity of Latin, Hebrew and Greek, for which it may be worth getting the Crossway edition for English translations.

I can’t speak for all of the Crossway volumes that have currently been published, but I read Apostasy from the Gospel from the Crossway series (which is vol. 14), and I thought the editorial notes (and the introduction by Joel Beeke) were super thorough and helpful. If I remember correctly, the Latin, Greek, and Hebrew were translated for the reader in the footnotes? I could be wrong about that bc I don’t have my copy near me, but I remember the editor taking time to clarify those things.

Well if it helps, I don't think Crossway has gotten around to his "Display of Arminianism" yet. They have only released vols. 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 18, 19, and 28 (out of 40 total). I have all but vol. 28 and from TOC, there is no "Display of Arminianism". You might wanna shoot the untranslated phrase to Google (or even better - here!)
And yes, I agree with young Mr. Lawrence above, the distinctions from Banner to Crossway are huge. Translated phrases, insightful editorial essays introducing not just historical context but the complex flow of his thoughts and a Table of Contents that break his works down into clear sections that link with the insightful flow of his thoughts illuminated by the editor(s).

I happily paid a lot more dollars for my Crossway editions than I would have for Banner (no offense intended to Banner as a wonderful press that I support and purchase from as well)

Thanks. As far as I understand they do translate any footnotes as well in the Crossway volumes. The purpose of the thread is really to say it seems worth it to buy the Crossway editions where there is a lot of Latin, Hebrew and Greek freshly translated, and ask which of Owen's works that applies to.

I suppose I could trawl through the Banner set to see which volumes have a lot of untranslated quotes and footnotes(!) but thought to get the perspectives of others first.

If you own the Banner of Truth edition, you may buy the Crossway volumes as eBooks in their annual sale every year. Doing so will be considerably cheaper than buying the hard copies.

Just a tip, if you have ChatGPT on your phone, you can snap a pic of the Latin or whatever it is and it will translate it for you.

That said, the Crossway editions are quite nice.
