Sterne, the famous 18th-century novelist, was also an Anglican divine. Forty-five of his sermons were published between 1760 and 1769. In a used bookshop today, I found them, published as a two-volume hardback set in 1927 (in good condition, too). It'll be interesting to read them to see how orthodox he was. (He's been described as a "centrist" Anglican, meaning "latitudinarian.")

That's an interesting find. One of his sermons is included in Tristram Shandy, and it has a certain force to it. When Henry Venn read some of Sterne's sermons he thought that with the exception of a phrase or two they could have been preached in a synagogue or a mosque.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement, is it?
