Guys, is there anyone on the PB who is not only fluent in German but is also willing to chat with me and help me practice German?

I can’t seem to find anyone I know personally so I thought I’d reach out here. Thanks

I'm a little tired of these kinds of jokes...

German is a language that needn't be always associated with Hitler.

German is the language of Goethe, Schiller, Beethoven, Melanchthon, Luther...

Ich habe doch nicht viel Zeit mein Deutsch zu praktizieren, aber wir können vielleicht manchmal chatten.

My paternal grandfather, originally from Minnesota, had German parents who had emigrated from Germany just a few years before he was born. He once told me that he spoke only German until he was about 12. Then, America entered World War I, and suddenly it wasn't a good idea to speak German when out in public anymore. He learned English pretty quick after that.

Interestingly, as an adult he remembered very little of his German - just a few isolated words.

You need to brush up on your history if you think that the concept of German Militarism started with the Austrian Corporal.

Friedrich der Grosse, Blücher, Wilhelm I & II, Hermann der Cherusker, Hindenburg, Ludendorff, von Lettow-Vorbeck.

And, of course, how would the Revolution have turned out without von Stuben?

Simply this: There's more to German than militarism.

And, by the way, Germany's not the only country that's invaded other countries.

True to some extent. At the beginning if the 18th century Prussia was a bit of a minnow in Northern Europe. Frederick the Great really transformed the country. But Frederick added more territory by diplomacy than by conquest.

It was in the 19th century, after the humiliation of the Napoleonic Wars, that Prussia became again a leading state in Europe, and, despite its smaller population on comparison to the Austrian Empire, became the leading state of the Germanies. It's in that era that Prussian militaristic nationalism grew. It was in the wars with Denmark, Austria and France that their military theory and technology really developed.

Simply this: There's more to German than militarism.

I agree and get tired of it. German is on my language list. I've tinkered with it and have received similar feedback.... Ugly language. Nazis. Blah blah blah. Just ignore them.

Not to swipe Pablo's thunder but I may take you up next year. I decided to table my German studies until next year and instead taking private Spanish lessons. By year end Spanish should be locked down enough to start another language.

italki.com has tutors and teachers available. It isn't free but will likely make your learning more efficient.

I forgot to mention the site has folks who just want to do a language exchange. Most German youth are at least conversational in English by the time they get out of high school but it wasn't always that way. You could find a middle aged person learning English later in life. For example you agree to a one hour session with thirty minutes in English for him and thirty minutes in German for you.
