1918 flu pandemic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This could be another like the 1918 H1N1.

I'm going to do everything I can to be ready for major disruptions (shipping, shopping.) If this is a pandemic in the making it can peak in 3 months.

Got a will with legal guardians for your kids, just in case? You want the state to decide who gets them?

Plenty of great reformers in centuries of old saw plague as judgment.

Take a breath.... comparisons of any modern outbreak to 1918 is ludicrous. The medical situation today is NOTHING like the situation was then.

Medical care was NOWHERE near as widespread and available.
There was no such thing as an antibiotic.
There was no such thing as a sulfa-based drug.

Take a look at the whole situation before advocating heading for the hills with fresh fruits and pointed sticks.

Todd, you're right. But there are certain groups that are more at risk than others. Children, the elderly, anyone with a weakened immune system. It's not panic to take proactive measures to limit or deal with exposure.

Nothing wrong with proactive measures... I'm referring to the people crying "the sky is falling" and getting hysterical about this being the beginning of the end. It's a bad virus, and some people will be more susceptible to this (the same people who are susceptible to lots of other diseases). Somehow because this is H1N1 people are freaking out and calling for extreme measures... it's just silly.

Agreed that there is no need to panic. The 1918 pandemic deaths were mostly of bacterial complications in flu-weakened bodies and no antibiotics. This time around there are antibiotics and an antiviral medication that works. I hope the company that makes it is increasing production because the situation may overwhelm the supplies. It concerns me because we have international travel coming up and also if it hits my remote, rural clinic area it will cause a lot of deaths there with not much to do about it.

I heard that it was already into Ohio... good thing I don't get sick. :)

*ignores the fact that he was down for almost two weeks last winter*

Todd, you're exactly right. This is a relatively minor outbreak - a few dozen cases out of 300 million in this country means this is a very minor problem, not to mention modern antibiotics and modern techniques of treating pneumonitis and gastroenteritis ensure there will likely be no deaths in the US.

The post about media hype is also correct - this could not be more overblown. From a physician's perspective, I'm honestly not worried in the slightest. Use good hygiene, wash your hands thoroughly and often, and whatever small chance you had of contracting this to begin with will be reduced to nothing. :2cents:
