It seems that several of us here on PB have a Netflix subscription. I am thinking we should create a list of movies that you enjoyed that others may not know about.

Recently I have been watching various documentaries. Two that I found very interesting were:

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007)

This is a documentary about the competition for the highest score of Donkey Kong ever recorded.

Beer Wars (2009)

This is a great look into the life of microbreweries and their struggles.

I only remember vulgarity being used once, but I do admit that I watched them when I was laid up in bed with pneumonia so I may have missed some. My apologies if that is the case.

there are a few other threads about this, but there are more movies out now.

Instant:
Prison Break
The Atheism Tapes (it may raise your blood pressure)
The Burbs
American Pickers
Mac and Me
District 9
UHF
Surrogates
The Color of Magic

DVD:
Luther
Grand Torino
The Last sin eater

Too many to mention. We get the most use out of the Instant View movies. My kids like some of the cartoons but I especially recommend all the Shark Week stuff that they have.

Veronica Mars on instant, but probably only if you are a 20-something girl. I never saw it when the show was on TV but recently discovered it on netflix and it is my favorite show ever. My husband did like it, but not like I do. Not Rated, but it'd be a PG 13-er because there are some adult situations.

Also, again for the girls, The Young Victoria was a fun movie that I recently watched on instant. It is a love story about Queen Victoria--apparently pretty close to reality and it was really sweet. Rated PG.

Those of you who have Netflix and use the instant feature - how does it work over wireless networks? Many places where I would use it (including where my main TV is) are not accessible by wires.

Fred, I watch it quite frequently wirelessly on my laptop, which operates on a home network (second tier AT&T -- not the fastest but not the slowest). I have never had a problem watching it. The only time I ever get choppiness is what I try to load another page in the background while watching a movie.

As far as recommendations, I recently watched Iron Man (now on instant).

Fred, we use the instant feature through our Wii which is WiFi. Every few movies we will get a pause where the buffer is depleted--I don't think it has anything to do with the WiFi. I can't really comment on image quality since we don't have an HD setup.

Haven't been watching too many unknown movies lately, but if you are looking for a television series to watch, Stargate Atlantis, and The X-Files are available through instant (and yes, I am a sci-fi geek).

The X-Files isn't an entirely clean show (a few episodes have been so gruesome/disturbing that I've had to skip them), but overall it is an entertaining show. I would just suggest finding a website (like IMdB) that has a brief summary of the episode's plotline before watching an episode.

Stargate Atlantis may be my favorite tv show of all time. Relatively clean (some swearing and violence), and very entertaining.

Netflix just came to Canada!

We signed up the 1st day. For 8 bucks a month for unlimited downloads it is a great deal. We do not have cable or satelite, so DVD's are our only source for TV. Now we have a great choice & complete controll, plus we know what everybody is watching.

This is a great idea. I understand that in the US you also can have DVD's mailed to you. How does that work?

I understand that in the US you also can have DVD's mailed to you. How does that work?

We have a separate queue for DVD's through the mail. They ship in roughly one-two business days. We can keep the DVD as long as we like with no late fees. Once we return it, they ship the next available DVD in the queue. It comes (and goes) in a postage-paid mailer envelope. The more expensive the plan, the more DVDs we can have out at one time.

One advantage is that it is the traditional DVD so it's easier to set captions, etc. I don't hear well, so I struggle with some of the instant choices.

BTW, just read an article "outing" your price, which is lower than ours and speculating whether we'll notice and complain. Netflix basically responded that Americans are too self-absorbed to notice such a thing... What Netflix CEO hopes U.S. won't notice

So what is the US price?

BTW we do not have the option of ordering DVD's. Also the Canadian Content is less the the US content.

For any real men out there, Lost in Austin (a BBC mini series) was actually pretty good. You'll needed to have watched the 6 hour Pride and Predjudice with your wife before seeing it for it to make sense.

Bleak House was awesome.

Watching Tin Man right now - a sci-fi based on The Wizard of Oz. Really good.

All the Godfather films are on watch instantly. However those strike you, there they are.

All the X-Files stuff is watch instantly.

Serenity is really good (along with the tv series Firefly).

I really liked Away We Go and 500 Days of Summer. Some sexual stuff in the films - nothing's shown and it's completely for comedic flair. Some language in both.

And, of course, the Jane Austin films are on there as well, along with the BBC mini series's on that time period that are a lot of fun if you're into that stuff.

We frequently use it for streaming on our wireless network to our Wii, which works great (and the Wii + TV are upstairs and across the house from the wireless hub in our basement). Never had a problem with it - we also stream to both our laptops from everywhere in the house (and actually never stream to the one computer that's actually directly wired to the network)

Some things we've liked recently:
State of Mind

National Parks

Dh goes out of his way to find non-depressing, or otherwise inappropiate japanese animation, which are actually readily available on netflix.

My Neighbor Totoro
Last Exile (loved loved LOVED this one!)
Moribito: Guardian of the Sacred Spirit: Vol. 1-8 (just so you know: plot is fantasy and does have shinto-like dieties)

We've been watching the last few Dr. Who specials / episodes on Instant Watch

For the kiddies, I like Super Why (I have two in various stages of learning to read and this reinforces all that).

Book of Eli.

I respectfully disagree. This movie was garbage.

I respectfully disagree with your respectful disagreement.

Grand Torino is substnatively a great movie. If you edited out the language that movie though you'd have various, minute-long episodes of beeping, intersperced with the articles "the" and "a", with a preposition or two thrown around.

In other words, there be a whole lotta' cussin'. I heard racial slurs in that movie that I didn't know existed.

:ditto:

I've been enjoying:
National Geographic documentaries
Murder, She Wrote
Art & Copy -- interesting documentary on the advertising industry
Pawn Stars
Wallace and Gromit
Shark Week
Did You Hear About the Morgans? (surprising romantic comedy with very few objectionable elements--couldn't understand why it was rated PG-13 when New In Town was rated PG but was really raunchy)
Les Miserable (1998 version)
Survivorman
Mythbusters (love, love this show)
Rocky & Bullwinkle
Calliou and VeggieTales for my son

Jason, if I may warn you, the second season of Dexter is a bit heavy on the sexual content. If you want to avoid that, then skip to season three and just read a summary of season two on Wikipedia. Just a little FYI.

I've seen a couple of episodes of Dexter before (not on Netflix) and I really enjoyed the questions it raised about morality from a presumed amoral point of view. From what I could gather from the episodes and wikipedia, Dexter adheres to a moral code he was taught by his step-father, the latter realizing early that his son was a sociopath; devoid of human attachment, emotion, or conscience. Dexter is a serial killer who chooses his victims based on whether they are "good" or "bad", typically refraining from killing the "innocent" and opting to kill criminals to satisfy his desire to kill. It's a pretty interesting show. I can't conclude if Dexter desires to have a moral code (in which case he's not really amoral), or if he follows it because it's the best way to survive. I haven't seen much of the series though.

It's the latter; it's about not getting caught.
